Liverpool’s official website columnist, Kristian Walsh, claimed on Twitter that “Patrice Evra has accused racism of three players before today. All three have been cleared.” This tweet was retweeted by hundreds of Liverpool fans, as were similar ones. The problem was, that it wasn’t remotely true, not one bit.
In fact, before Saturday, Evra had accused zero people of racism, not the three quoted by Mr. Walsh and dozens of other Liverpool fans, not two, nor even one. There have been two incidents involving Evra and accusations of racial insults, the only problem is that Evra did not claim in either that he was racially abused – the claims came from others.
In the 2006 case of claimed racial abuse by Steve Finnan, the accusation was levelled at Finnan by a deaf fan who claimed he lip-read the racial slur. Evra declined to complain. A rather odd thing to do for a man with a supposed inclination to play the race card, I’m sure you’ll agree.
In the case with involving Chelsea groundsman, Sam Bethell, it was Mike Phelan and Richard Hartis of Manchester United’s coaching staff who claimed they heard the abuse. As the FA report says “The two witnesses who say they heard those words directed by Mr Bethell at Mr Evra are the Manchester United first team coach Mr Mike Phelan and the goalkeeping coach Mr Richard Hartis.” It later goes on to say “Even if we disregard the fact that Mr Evra has never claimed to have heard such a remark on that day, it is notable that there were several other people far nearer to Mr Bethell at the critical point in time than were either Mr Phelan or Mr Hartis.”
So in reality, Evra accused neither Finnan nor Bethell of a racist remark. The claims were made by others. These are the cold, hard facts.

That is simply not true. I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Suarez called Evra 'negrito' and from then on if it was up to The FA to determine the rest.

Ridiculous decision by the FA especially when Patrice Evra is involved, the guy cries racism when someone looks at him the wrong way.

I sincerely hope his ban get's overturned because he is an amazing player and he shouldn't be banned over another man's attention seeking agenda.

HE ADMITED USING A RACIAL TERM ON A FOOTBALL PITCH. Jesus, * is wrong with you people? It's not Evra's fault and it's an absolute disgrace that some of you are trying to blame him.

Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle says cultural or language differences are no excuse for the comments for which Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been banned.

Preston defender Carlisle tells BBC Radio 5 live that "no form of discriminatory abuse should be acceptable" and that he supports the eight-match ban given to Suarez by the Football Association for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

What he said is that "Negro" and "Negrito" don't have immediate racist connotations in Spanish - and he's right.

"Negro" is of course the Spanish word for "black" - as in "quiero pudin negro", or "I want black pudding." "Negrito" means "little black person" and it does seem that in Uruguay a phrase like that is without racist connotations.

Why this argument has failed, I suspect, is because he has failed to give a satisfactory context as to why he used those words. He couldn't prove that he used the terms as a description.

So I'm to assume that it was used in a positive context? "Great tackle there little black person". Ffs come on. Bringing race into an argument on a football pitch is always unacceptable no matter what. Why are you trying to justify this? It's not making you look good.

Why don't trying reading the whole post. It's not that long, I'm sure you can manage an extra paragraph.

But incase you can't, I said his argument obviously didn't stand up to scrutiny. He couldn't prove that used these terms in a context that could be considered non-racist. Ergo, he said something racist.

He's aloud to play until they make an appeal, think they've 14 days to decide. Something like that anyway.

The FA have confirmed Luis Suarez's eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra could be increased if he appeals.

People also seem to be missing the fact that Suarez is mixed race himself.

I think Liverpool have got this all wrong. I dont know why they didnt just come out and say something along the lines of: "Suarez is not a racist but said something that is acceptable in his own culture but is unacceptable in England. No racial offence was intended and he apologises to Evra if he took offence". That would be enough for me, and it would have been far more honest than just denying anything was said.

I also think it would make sense for every club to sit their team down and explain what is and is not allowed in this country as regards offensive chat. What words we consider worthy of an 8 game ban, and what words we do not consider to be worthy of even a yellow card is 100% based upon cultural baggage in this country. Makes sense to explain it to everyone, especially when most of your employees are foreign and formally uneducated.

Personally I do not think the 8 game ban is correct.
