Neil Lennon today warned Celtic signing target Grzegorz Sandomierski he will have to cope with the pressure of being hailed the new Artur Boruc.

Despite reports the 21-year-old is on his way to Glasgow for signing talks, he has reported for duty with Poland ahead of their friendly with Georgia on Wednesday.

But Sandomierski will be allowed to leave camp if a deal can be agreed.

There is no immediate rush to sign him ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline for participation in the Europa League knockout round because he is cup-tied until the group stage.

But Lennon would like to get what will be a £1.9million deal done because there is serious interest from Racing Genk – and nine other clubs.

“I think Tottenham are interested in him as well, from what I gather,” said Lennon.

“I’ll speak to Peter Lawwell and see if we are any further down the line with it.”

One advantage Celtic have over the likes of Spurs is that Sandomierski does not want to join a club where he will not be first choice because he wants to be part of the Polish squad for Euro 2012, which they co-host with Ukraine.

Lennon is disappointed Sandomierski will not be eligible to face Sion, but considers him a long-term investment, not a short-term fix.

“We like him and he has great potential,” said the Hoops boss, who watched Lukasz Zaluska record a second straight clean sheet in yesterday’s win at Pittodrie.

Lennon continued: “We know there will be comparisons with Artur. And, if Sandomierski does come in, it will be instant.

“I think that’s a pressure he doesn’t really need.

“But he is not far off the international squad, and Stevie Woods, our goalkeeping coach, thinks he can make him better.

“So, if we can get him, we will be delighted.”

Almost as long-running as the search for a keeper has been Lennon’s attempt to bring in another striker, while a loan move for a left-back will be considered in light of Emilio Izaguirre’s leg break.

Rotherham’s Adam le Fondre is the latest name linked, and Lennon would like to see a new face arrive quickly.

He said: “I’m looking for another striker, definitely. There are a couple of irons in the fire, but I can’t say any more than that at the moment.”

Really hope we get this kid. One of the top under 21 keepers out there. We better not miss the boat. In saying that Genk can outbid us since they got £6 million for Thibaut Courtois, who they obviously need to replace.

 

2 million could be a steal by the sounds of things.
