I never could get into U.S. comedy sitcoms.

    Always turn my stomach.

    Friends etc.

    Awful.

    I'm not picky.
One of my favourite American one's was Friends.

British one was Only Fools And Horses.

I liked Still Game, Rab C Nesbitt, Cheers and Open All Hours as well. Open All Hours used to round off my Sunday nights nicely when I was a kid :smiley-laughing002:

I think the vast majority of American sitcoms are style over substance but when they get it right they really get it right.

I love Malcolm In The Middle. The bit with the hand grenade in the fridge and the grandads reaction to it is something I can watch over and over.

For the Yanks Malcolm In The Middle was a rare piece of magic with perfect writing and casting. People go on about how great Friends is but the 3 girls are annoying as * and Ross could be winner of sitcom's dullest ever character. Sports Night is a close second to Malcolm In The Middle for best American comedies.

    In no particular order
    The Young Ones
    Father Ted
    Fawlty Towers
    The Office
    Extras
The Thick of It - probably my favourite sitcom. Peter Capaldi as Tucker is brilliant, plus theres an episode he has a go at fans of the huns

Alan Partridge, Fawlty Towers, The thick of it, and the Office are about as good as it gets for me.

There is an easy way to work this out. About 20 years ago script writers realised that any good sitcom needed the village idiot character. We have Trigger (OFAH), Fr Dougal, Coach/Woody (Cheers) etc. Then the next step was obvious: two village idiots and the success of Friends via Phoebe and wotsisname. I didn't get in quick enough but the concept was finally extended to the obvious and hence the greatest sitcom of all time must be The Vicar of Dibley!

PS Golden Girls has to be right up there and follows the rule via Betty White (think that's her name), the dippy one with Scandinavian roots.

Golden Girls was quite ok, Taxi was quite good, and Steptoe and Son was brilliant in patches, but sometimes painful!(wanting Harold to succeed!)
Phoenix Nights was pretty good also.

Cant remember my last post, but Early Doors and The IT Crowd for me are soooo underrated. Can watch them over and over!

One foot in the grave deserves a mention.
