I would like to think this guy was better surely ?
However this could be a waste of money
Gravesen, Donati, Virgo... All wastes !!
I really hope it doesn't end up the same with this guy

are people honestly moaning because strach said he won't just walk into the side without merit? are you lot on drugs?

Sorry mate but have you forgotten the £4.4 million Scott Brown? :icon_mrgreen:

23/24 is still very young for a centre back who supposedly come into their prime after 26 (like Caldwell recently!!). Although I've seen hardly anything of this guy though, the run with Cardiff last season shows he can mix it with the big boys when playing well and its always nice to get one over the huns so I'm reasonably chuffed with this transfer...

Ah. Then, if Strachan bought him, I don't know why. He said the first CB pair is untouchable, and this guy can't play LB...

i have heard the transfer is anything between £2m-£3m.

i just think that he has bought at the same level of Caldwell and McManus so he has 3 players he can rely on at centre back meaning he can chop and change, making them more fresh throughout the season. its not a bad thing. i know people were expecting players in this window to 'walk into the team' but we do not have the money to buy the finished article and players better than what we have. we buy for players potential, which for me is the best way forward for my club.

its just strengthening our spine of the team even more. i think two seasons from now, at the earliest, (when Bobo and Gravesen would have difinitly gone and we will hopefully got rid of our debt) is the time we will seriously spend on players that can walk into the team.

in the time being, have faith in what WGS and PL are doing for our club. they haven't failed us yet.

Strachan: Loovens will not be first choice

GORDON STRACHAN has delivered an astonishing first-team snub to Glenn Loovens - just hours after splashing out £2.5m to * him from Cardiff.
And the Celtic boss has claimed the Dutch defender, who is completing his switch to the SPL from Ninian Park, needs to be five-times better to even break into the Bhoys first-choice back-line.
Strachan has spent the past few weeks courting the 24-year-old, finally getting his man when Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale accepted a bid late on Thursday.
But Strachan has insisted Loovens will be playing second-fiddle to skipper Stephen McManus and Gary Caldwell at Parkhead.
Strachan said: “Loovens is a centre-half, he is decent height and he’s a good player.
“But if I wanted to make sure I got somebody who is far better than Stephen McManus and Gary Caldwell, I would have to pay £15million to £20million and that’s not going to happen.
“So we are buying a player whom we think we can make better, mould into the team, put pressure on people or claim a place for themselves.”
With Loovens’ unveiling imminent after flying to Glasgow to complete a medical on Friday, punters had predicted the former Feyenoord man would nick Caldwell’s place to line-up next to Celtic skipper McManus.
But Strachan, whose side face Dundee United on Sunday, added: “Here’s one for you. Since March, Gary Caldwell has been our best player, absolutely our best player.
“If anybody doesn’t recognise that or give credit for him playing well – or think he didn’t play well – then that is not an unbiased opinion and there’s something to it.
“I think he’s been smashing since he arrived here and the fact that he doesn’t get on with the press definitely affects him.”
It is a huge blow already for Loovens who had cited international ambitions and the chance to play in the Champions League as a major reason for quitting Ninian Park.
But it now seems the Dutchman had his work cut out to make his mark in Scotland after Strachan’s incredibly-timed comments.
But Caldwell has admitted the arrival of Loovens will boost the SPL champions.
The centre-half said: “It’s why you play for Celtic. You want to be tested and challenged and having competition can only be good for individuals and the team.
“The boys are looking forward to new faces coming in and I’m sure it will improve us.”

Jesus Christ I hate the press.

For the second time this week I'm reading with astonishment complete 100% bullshit made up by the press. Where the * does Strachan say this?

    Anyway

Reading through the rest of the article it's good to see Strachan is playing hard-ball with this guy and making him work for his place in the team. He also has a point saying to get someone whos a significant improvement over our 2 current CB's would cost a facking shitload.

he wont be first choice on sunday but this bhoy will prove to be a better centre back than either of what we have playing now, so time will tell on who he will take over from, but the boy is too good to be on the bench, quality CB

    WGS goes onto say...
shows that it might not have been the Algarve Cup that made WGS sit up and take notice.

if he wants 4 first team quality CB's. who are they? McManus, Caldwell, Loovens and ? i don't think that player is O'Dea. i know people on here rate him highly, some even say he is better than McManus. but i don't believe that. i rate McManus as our best defender at the club (cannot judge Loovens as he hasn't playe in the hoops yet, obviously).

one thing is for sure, we need a left back before the window shuts.
