Why did we spend 3million on a player we could have signed on a pre contract in six months?

Exclusive: Celtic beat Rangers to land £2.5m Cardiff defender Glenn Loovens
    by Keith Jackson

CELTIC have beaten Old Firm rivals Rangers in the race for Cardiff City stopper Glenn Loovens.

The SPL champions were finalising a £2.5 million swwop for the Dutchman last night and the deal will be completed on Saturday when Loovens arrives in Glasgow to put pen to paper on a four year contract.

The dramatic raid on Ninian Park came after a day of cat-and-mouse between Glasgow's big two but, although Ibrox boss Walter Smith was first to meet the Welsh club's cash demands, 24-year-old Loovens held out for a dream ticket to the Champions League with Celtic.

Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell raised the stakes yesterday afternoon by slapping in an offer of s2 million, only for that bid to be booted out by Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale.

Then Rangers came in with an extra s500,000 to finally meet the price Ridsdale had been holding out for since Smith's chase for Loovens' signature began more than three weeks ago.

But, within an hour, Lawwell had stepped in again to match the Ibrox bid and now Loovens - who believes he can earn a place in the Dutch World Cup squad by playing in Europe's elite - is expected to complete a medical and sign on the dotted line before Celtic face Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday.

The news is a blow for Rangers boss Smith who has been after Loovens since last month and stepped up his efforts to sign the former Feyenoord man following the controversial sale of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa.

This man Peter is ruthless in all he does. Talk about kick a man when he's down and it is not the first time-Skippy, Brown etc.
Lets hope when his time comes he gets the job as gate keeper above, there will be no scum near enough to disturb our peace.

I think this is a good move. I do think he will line up beside mcmanus. I dont think Caldwell will be dropped either. I think its the end for Hartley. I think Caldwell will jump straight into the Defensive Mid Position. He has played their before and with Lenny Helping him I think he could master it. Plus his passing is very good especially his long balls.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

1.77... I reckon we will sign another, huge CB. This guy is too small to be good without someone huge covering him.

Well, McManus is about 1.88, beside, he could be a could headerer even if he is small. He could jump really high.

I reckon Balde might even stay. Loovens could jump high, but it's much better if you have a starting advantage in height. Cousin would eat this lad...

you've still not answered my question. have you seen either of them play in their domestic leagues? if you haven't how can you judge that you want Basa over Loovens?

He was a high jumper? Lord...I wasn't aware of this. A short CF is okay, but a short CB can be a disaster... I hope this guy can play LB, because I wouldn't trust him a CB position.

He's slightly taller than Cannavaro and I think we can all agree he's a class CB, so I wouldn't worry about his height.

I don't rate Cannavaro very much. For me, Nesta's injury saved the Italian NT on WC 2006, because M. Materazzi came on. He saved them, not that midget.

F^cking * pal, i'll be interested to see the reaction to THAT. Each to their own, i suppose.

Puyol is the same height and there's a lot of others too but if you don't rate Cannavaro I doubt you'll rate the rest of the guys I've found at a similar height.

    Anyway back on topic:

Glenn Loovens says he has chosen to join Celtic ahead of Rangers due to the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Cardiff City have given Loovens permission to speak to Celtic after a fee, believed to be in the region of £2.5million, was agreed between the two clubs.
Rangers had also shown an interest in the Dutch defender, but the Ibrox club's elimination from Europe last week has scuppered their hopes of signing Loovens.
Though the centre-half acknowledged it was a tough decision, he is hoping to become a Celtic player in time to face Dundee United in the SPL on Sunday.
"I had the choice of Rangers and Celtic and it was a hard decision to make," Loovens told the Scottish Daily Express.
"But the chance to play in the Champions League is what swung it for me. It's a stage every player wants to grace.
"I was flattered by Rangers' interest, but the chance to play in Europe was just too good to turn down.
"I'm delighted to be joining a club like Celtic. They are a big club and it will be a dream to play for them.
"Everything should be tied up over the next two days and I'm hoping to be available for the game on Sunday."
