Giorgos Giakoumakis will NOT leave Celtic tonight, Football Scotland understands.

The striker, 28, has been in discussions with both Urawa Red Diamonds and Atlanta United for a number of weeks with a view to an exit and a new challenge. It had been reported that the Greek hitman was on the verge of a move to MLS with Atlanta and even teased that he would become their new signing at midnight last night.

But Football Scotland understands negotiations are, in fact, ongoing and that the player still has a decision to make. With the window set to close in less than a few hours, Giakoumakis will likely remain a Hoops striker beyond tonight. It is understood the player WILL still leave the club but deadline days elsewhere will allow Ange Postecoglou and his club to rubber-stamp the move down the line.


In Japan the winter window closes at the end of February while clubs in the MLS have until May to do their business.




The player is still mulling over his options as to where to move next, but it will not be in Europe which allows some breathing room for his representatives and the clubs to take time to get the decision spot on.

 

He’s done ok for us but never been Ange’s first pick. I’m not overly concerned about him leaving.

I’m gutted about it, I really * like him as a player, and think he’s leaving without reaching what could be his full potential with us. Not us a young guy who has more to his game, just as a guy who hasn’t had the gametime in games where he could have made a difference more than he got the time to show.

Him being away, now Kyogo doesn’t have the safetynet of GG being there, his game needs to go up another level. And as ridiculous as his record is and what he has done for us already, he has it in him.

 

Him staying would be the best move we’ve made this window.

 

He doesn’t want to be here and Ange won’t give him any game time.
We’d be far better getting some cash in for him.
Keeping players against their wishes has proved disastrous in the past.

Signing GG was a long drawn out process, and the same has been true with this transfer saga.

Are the J League and MLS windows not still open after January? I thought they’re a different timescale?

 

Yes - think it was said somewhere above MLS window doesn't close until May. If that is the case could even be the case he could stay to then and still be transferred. Doubt it but might happen.

 

Might be we have decided to keep big GG for the Hun games.

I've no real problem him staying for a bit longer but doubt it will happen and if it does pretty sure he'd be 3rd in-line now. Think it's a very slim chance it'll be more than a few weeks though.
