Actually acceleration is something bulking up does help with but I get your point that becoming a muscle bound sprinter would probably reduce his agility.

There's a balance, which the sport scientists at Celtic will be well aware of. I studied it at uni actually. Every player will be on different exercise regimes to suit their game. For example look at the Man City defenders, every one of them are bulit like tanks, because it benefits their game. Where as Silva is all about movement and finding space so it wouldn't help him to be 2 stone heavier.

GMS could do with adding some muscle to make him less injury prone and speed him up but you have to be careful not to over do it.

Aye in terms of Mackay-Steven thought I was thinking bulking up his upper body, as he is too easily knocked off the ball, if he was to do that itd take away his acceleration which comes from having a light upperbody and good legs.

I'm not too sure about the technicalities of adding muscle mass and its effect on acceleration but I've heard that olympic lifter, who are pretty muscle-bound, are some of the quickest athletes in the world in terms of acceleration.

IMO we should sign him and just stick him on the Messi HGH diet.

That is probably my one criticism of him actually. He'll pull off a dazzling piece of skill, beat 2 players but then your John Rankin's will just push him off the ball. It will draw fouls in good areas but he will also pick up injuries as a result. Ryan Fraser suffered from it and so has Forrest to an extent. It's no wonder wingers pick up so many injuries, esoecially in Scotland.

I would have both Mackay-Steven and Russell in a second. I've been a big admirer of Mackay-Steven for a while now. I just think he is the type of player that we are crying out for. Someone who will get the fans on the edge of their seat, he has talent in abundance. When Forrest comes up against a pacy full back, he struggles, mainly because he hasn't really got a trick and he relies on speed. Mackay-Steven is similar to McGeady in terms of trickery. Aiden wasn't the quickest but constantly went past players with ease because he had skill. One of the biggest worries though is that he picks up a fair few injuries.

These 2 can play left wing obviously russel is more so a striker but we can do with a winger and a striker in these 2 we get that plus there Scottish which is great to see. Plus russel is a Tim he will give his all where guys like miku just don't put the 100% in.

The only reason i can think that were not more heavily linked to GMS is his fitness, he seems to go through spells of injuries and definately needs to bulk up a bit so maybe there is a problem there and we think it might take a long time to get him up to speed?.

I'm not talking about a player getting fat :smiley-laughing002: And generally I'm not a fan of an athlete increasing muscle mass just for the sake of it. In the case of someone like Riordan though, I think he could've benefited hugely from spending a summer in the gym.

I like GMS but I fear he'd be a bit like McGeady, a luxury player with very little end product. I'd certainly take Russell though.

I really hope we sign them both.

Mackay-Steven must surely be up there with the most naturally gifted and technically replete players Scotland has produced in many a year.
