He's scored about as many as last season, and done well in Europe to boot, so what on Earth makes you say that?

Hooper will score against ANYONE. Give him the ball in the box, and he scores. That's just what he does.
We'd struggle to find a striker with a better shot conversion rate if we had 30 million to spend, let alone the 5 odd million we do have.

and @Damnati I agree with you mate, i'm not saying Charlie or Ledley are LBs i'm just saying they can do a job there and unless Dixon is definitely better than both of them in that position, then I don't see the point in bringing him in.
And as for Russell and GMS, I'm impressed by them and think they could go onto be good or even great players - but again I ask is it worth us pillaging a smaller club and spending a few million (which is pretty much our whole budget) to get them in, are they that much better than what we have now or they have that much more potential?

Sometimes players are over looked just because they play for another SPL side, these players stand out and shine in a smaller club, surround them with players that can perform and you have the chance of greatness. For me Russell and Mackay-Steven could be absolutely tremendous for us both young, both ambitious and most importantly both skilled players.

Sometimes you need to give people chances and let them shine for me its a no brainer sign them up now and watch them tear teams apart or lose them to another club down south.

Also i think Hooper although good on his day really isnt all that 18 SPL goals is not prolific not by a long shot especially playing for a club like Celtic.

Good players for the spl, but our goal next season is to make a mark on Europe so we need a higher calibre of player.

All for signing them, both really promising, where would they fit the squad though? We already have plenty of promising or similar players to them and are still short of these 2-3 experienced guys with proven quality we keep hearing about

Hopefully we sign both. Too many SPL(even SFL) players have been over looked that could do a job for us. Wouldn't mind Dixon as cover for Izzy as well so Mulgrew can play CB all the time. Is he out of contract in the summer does anyone know(Dixon) ?

    You're right there.
And I would love to sign both players, but I don't see the harm in them having another year of first team football at Dundee Utd (who hopefully might get a decent run in Europe too).
Unless a club is coming in with concrete offers for both players, I don't see the rush in signing them.

another year and potentially European experience would see their fee skyrocket, increase interest and potentially scupper us. I'd take the gamble now. Even if it was buy and loan back for a season should they get into Europe.

He reminds me of a direct version of McGeady when he first came through. He would be a star in this Celtic side.

McGeady is who springs to mind as a comparison for me too. I'd be very pleased with both.

So seriously guys would you be prepared to pay 3m each for these two?, bear in mind Utd sold Goodwillie for 2.5 to Blackburn so they will be looking for a bit more as these two are better prospects.

For me I'd much rather we went after another flair player like Nakamura in the 3-3.5m range, somebody who has a pedigree in a better league with a bit of experience is what we should be looking for if were spending that sort f money, guys like Stokes etc are good when your getting them for 1m but 3m is too far, there is no way Russell is 3x better than Stokesy when you look at it like that.

I think Russel only has a year on his contract left, so you could pick him up for about £1million. I think if we went in with £2.5million we could get both.

Hooper hasn't been great yet still scores a bundle. i think that speaks volumes. Hooper and Stokes had a lot more experience in better leagues than Rhodes currently has under his belt.

he is a talent but to give up Stokes or Hooper for him would be a risk never mind losing both of them to fund this deal.

i have to agree. can't explain it but i think both would do well here and actually improve us for Europe - which may surprise some. out of the two i'd be more excited by MAckay-Steven but again, i can't explain why.

i understand your scepticism on the potential moves. however, we have missed out on countless of talents due to us being too careful. take the gamble. Mackay-Steven contract's up in 2013 and Russell's is up in 2014 so i can't see Dundee Utd being too unreasonable. £3m will do it imo. it's a gut feeling so i can't explain it but i think these two will become very valuable additions if they were to join.

imo Dixon is better than Ledley at left back but i prefer to see Mulgrew in the middle. although, probably way down on the list but i feel we need a left back as Izaguirre's loss hit us hard. i feel that we lost balance to our left flank. Dixon would be great for us. he has had a great season so far.

yeah, he is on a Bosman in the Summer and i think he'd be great cover for Izaguirre while allowing others that have been drafted in (Mulgrew, Ledley et al) to focus on their primary positions.

tbf Goodwillie had played more games for Dundee Utd than Russell and Mackay-Steven combined. i think they are more of a team this season whereas last season they depended on Goodwillie a lot of the time. also there was competition for Goodwillie signature which would have driven the price up. whereas Mackay-Steven and Russell seem to only have us and even that is dodgy reporting.

people are saying for £3m we'd get both Mackay-Steven and Russell. i'd agree with that. but by your logic, Goodwillie is ten times the player as Larsson? footy transfers don't work like that.

For the summer I would like us to sign:

    Russell
    Rhodes
    Snodgrass
    New GK (Forster or Gordon)
    New CB (Zanka)

    ( Unlikely ~~
Bannan - If they'd do a swap for Ki or something.
McCarthy - If we sell Ki.)

I wouldn't mind Mackay-Steven, but I'd want us to shift the following:

    M.Wilson
    Cha
    O'Dea
    Thompson
    Towell
    Majstorovic
    Loovens
    K.Wilson
Ki (If we get anything over £6m)
    Juarez
    McGinn
    McCourt (Sadly, for his career.)
    Rasmussen
    Bangura
    Murphy
    Brozek (Released)

I would have suggested Samaras and Commons in that list, however they have a lot more to give the team and are incredibly unique players who should be kept hold of unless crazy money is offered. (i.e anything over £4m)

I would say £4m is a fair offer for the two.
