Because as soon as Celtic went in for him, the price would have been inflated as we're a league rival to Hibs.

I still hope we go after that Vargas guy from Chile too. I think he was only around 1.5m? If we brought in Fortune and Vargas and a decent playmaker in the midfield along with a LB, I wouldn't be too upset.

Good point. If there are Celtic fans who have watched him a few times and have seen the extent of his ability, then they're more than entitled to hold an opinion. I've never heard of the guy before this, so until he plays for us, I hold no judgement.

I really, really, really hope that the Marc-Antoine Fortune signing is a smokescreen.

    Why?

Well to start with, he's 28 in a couple of days time, the thick end of £4M is big bucks for Celtic these days, so we should really be looking at younger player who are likely to have both more playing time ahead of them, and the potential for having some resale value when they move on.

Next up, scoring record. That fountain of undisputible facts Wikipedia shows his goalscoring exploits, 64 goals in 263 games, 18 of which, were for a team currently playing in the French sixth, YES SIXTH, division.

Thirdly, this guy is from French Guiana, not a nation of sporting gods by any standard, yet he hasn't won a cap for them.

I honestly cannot see the value in a striker who'se maximum return (in top flight football) is 11 goals in 53 games.

im not disputing your facts, tictical genius, but i feel i should also point out, the number of appearances for each season are senior club appearances, in all competitions, and the number of goals listed is for the league only. not that it makes a huge difference mind, but it should be taken into consideration.

I'm sure they do, but that does not limit anyone's entitlement to an opinion does it? otherwise what would be the point of this, or any other forum?

Any more nuggets of wisdom for us?

    Less of the "son", cyber-auld-yin

Wikipedia or not, there is no disputing this players age, and as such the likliehood of diminishing returns to be expected on our cash.

imo its a game of chess just now,we have offered him a deal ,which he has bettered but obviously wants to come to us,so he is using this as levarage,as would anyone in the same situ.
i think he will come to us for less money but he wont cut his own throat ,plus his agent will want him to take the best deal ,so a lot to consider.:50:

I don't think we are any longer in a position to buy players at their peak and expect them to be anything better than SPL standard. We have tried and failed with the bigger reputations of Graveson, Donati, Jarosic etc, and we got all those guys at half the price of Fortune or less.

WBA had the option to buy Fortune for £1.5M at the end of his loan spell. His price has been inflated as a result of the auction that has taken place, IMO

I think we will get Fortune and Janko, and JVOH and Samaras will be out the door.

i'd want fortune and janko . and would get rid of JVOH but would keep sammy so that we have 4 decent strikers because i think you need 4 remember the striker crisis last season where we had to resort to cillian sheridan being a regular starter

True Minty. I have known about and watched marc-antoine fortune for a number of years now and always was impressed tbh.
Fast , strong and powerful , eye for goal. dont want to big him up too much but after reading some peoples opinions , I feel I must say something.
He is worth 4m , and he is a mix between henri camara and bellamy with a more direct approach. Far stronger presence and fear factor than both too. Good option imo.

Im not disputing facts stated in earlier thread..(it surprizes me) but my opinion was always positive on him.(even long before he was linked with us)

    Hail Hail

Would need to mate, i'm not one for getting involved in that moronic pastime of hurling abuse at players.
