I would have bought Akinfeev for less, best keeper in the game

Guys can you recommend a formation to use for Celtic? I've tried an attacking 4-4-2 and a variation of an attacking 4-5-1 but I don't seem to get a lot goals, and everytime the opposition go forward it's heart in mouth time for me (despite having closing down on own half)

I'm in work right now so I apologise for lack of screenies, I do struggle away a lot and sometimes at home especially against f*cking Hearts for some reason, limping towards the end of the season and I'm top clear by 3 points from Dundee united (Hearts 3rd Rangers joint 4th with ICT).

My Top Goal scorer is JVOH with 11, Maloney with 8, McGeady & Ronaldo with 6 (Sold McDonald to Man City for 6.5mill).

MyChampions League group this season - Arsenal, Werder Bremen & Fiorentina. I Got owned seriously, finishing bottom, and the fans still hate me for losing 2-1 to Partizan Belgrade in a friendly at the start of the season!

Any assistance on a formation would be appreciated.

for my celtic team i used a 5-3-2 formation, when playin both home and away, boruc didnt concede in more than 900 minutes of football which i think is * good, this includes playin teams like villarreal and inter milan

Aye, he is cheap but brilliant. I bought him as a temporary as I bought Rat from Shakhtar but he wasnt coming till Jan so I bought Mulgrew to slot in there till then but Its 2 seasons later and Mulgrew has not been moved.

I posted his stats on page 72 when i first bought this guy, 1 & 1/2 seasons later he has become a wonderkid. I have bought wonderkids only for that title to change once they come to CP but this guy is the first that I've developed into a wonderkid, AFAIK in any FM game. I feel a great sense of achievement :icon_mrgreen:

They have stifled because of the current first team players tbh, I'm trying to sell these players that I dont really want but I wont accept low fees so they're potential will probably be lost unfortunately

I've gotten a few more regens and in the process of getting some real quality ones but I have to learn to know when to let go of players.

In the january window so aggressive selling is the aim of the game

Van Der Vaart is kicking up a fuss so he'll be gone by next season. I want 25M for him but nobody will stump up the cash :icon_mrgreen:

I'll work hard to get them out on loan before the window shuts

The guy labelled the next patrice evra is lacking intelligence, I've tried pairing him with Lee Wallace but nothing is picked up. He's now 18 and listed for loan.

I'm thinking of changing his training in a desperate attempt to put him right

What do people think of this custom schedule. I've gotten a coach report from my defence coach as he's give the best and most detailed judgement on a defender.

Given his shortcomings, am I focussing on the right areas? A

I'm not sure if mental attributes can be improved through training, I think they only improve as the player ages or is tutored, maybe you can find someone else with high attributes in those areas to tutor him.

Not true my friend. Tacticial training is the training of some mental stats, it has to be

I know I'm not an expert on this, but I'm not half bad either (as opposed to Tactics, where I'm not the best).

Anyway, thought I'd put together a few things to consider for people making their own training schedules, so that maybe more people will try it out themselves.

If anyone has any thoughs or opinions, such as maybe more experienced coaches like DarkStarr and Tug, feel free to let me know.

Before I begin:

Equally, this focus on re-shaping the attributes underneath the CA, would allow you to take this same defender and whilst not increasing his CA, you could in theory re-shape his individual attributes to make him perform his specific role better - at the expense of the other attributes that he doesn't need. This could make him a "better" player for YOU in YOUR system.

The number of stars determines how quickly you can re-shape the existing CA points as well as any additional ones gained through playing games.

How the CA points are then "spent" on individual attributes is another story, but one that I'm happy to go into if of interest. But I warn you, it is VERY complicated.

Different types of attributes:

There are two types, aboslute and relative attributes. Aboslute are specific for the individual and cannot be affected by training (but possibly with age). Relative attributes, however, are those that can be affected by training. Most of the attributes are relative, and the only three attributes that arn't included in the training report screen over the players in FM09 are Influence, Aggression and Determination. However, I am led to beleive that other attributes, such as Work Rate and Natural Fitness also are, even though FM reports they are included in a training category. A decent proof for the latter is that Natural Fitness doesn't decline with age.

What area covers which attributes:

These are the attribute categories that can be found within FM.
As stated above, it is uncertain if all of the attributes they contain are actually affected by training, rather than age or, indeed, nothing. To simplify things though let's assume that they all are, except Natural Fitness.

Workload and Training Categories:

Workload:
First of all, lets get one thing straight. Sliding the bars up as high as possible is very good, but unfortunately that increases workload and workload is bad.

So a * schedule will get the appropriate bars for each position, or indeed the whole team, as high up as possible without getting the workload above an acceptable level.

What "acceptable level" is depends on how many games your players play, and how generally fit they are. If you'r players arn't 100% rested for matches, when they have had 3-4 days between them, then you are probably training them too hard. If you have a big squad and rotate your players, maybe you can train them a bit harder, it is always a question of personal judgement.

Categories:
Now, each and one of these categories will increase workload differently. The two physical ones increase workload the most, and the more technical and intellectual ones like Set Peices and Tactics, less.

What you choose to focuss your regimes on is obviously dependant on your own priorities, but what is important is that you realize what those priorities are.

Example: If you are a very strong team, playing creative, flairful football, even your defenders need a fair amount of technical skills and should be trained to do so. However, if you are a lower league team, and you are playing a simple, direct sort of football, your defenders will mostly just need to defend, and won't need so many technical skills (but, they will need attacking training as it covers passing, and a team playing direct passing will often see their defenders pass the ball upfield).

Bear in mind that physical training also comes in form of matches, while the other categories don't.

Regimes:

Now to the topic of regimes. There is no right or wrong here, but we'll go through the most common regime set-ups:

General:
The Default general one has all bars set to the same level. I personally usually just leave it at that, specially if I have good coaches and facilities at hand. The downside is that sometimes players get training in areas they don't really need. You can also create a new schedule and set all your players to it, and you can modify it the way you want. The downside is that you will always have a few players suffering from less training in the attributes relevant for their positions in that case.

Individual Regimes:
Now, this is particularly useful when you just have one schedule with all your players on. Suddenly, maybe a regen pops up with amazing technical attributes but terrible physical. Then, you might want to consider putting him on an individual schedule with more intense physical training than the others.

Position related regimes:
This seems to be the most common method among people, if you ask me. You create a regime for each position, and put the players into there accordingly. The benefits are that you can really tweak each regime to fit that type of player. The downside is that it takes a lot more work and administration, and some might argue (Lewis for instance ) that it won't make very much difference.

Mentality related regimes:
This is something I often do. Sometimes, specially in for my youth teams, I simply create two or three groups that are: Attackin, Neutral and Defensive. They are fairly generic, but the Attacking one focusses on Attacking, Ball control, Shooting, etc, the Neutral has everything set to the same and the Defensive focusses on Tactics, and Defending. This is just to simplify things for those that don't want to bother with too specific training schedules. It is also good for youth players, as they require more generic training than older players, but this way you can still somewhat specify it.

Couple of notes:

- Don't leave anything out completely in a schedule. Or do so at your own peril. I personally would recommend to at least have a few notches on everything for all players.

- Positional and PPM training takes up training space for the players, so their attribute training will be less effective if they do.

- A good tip is to start making your schedules fairly generic, and then to tweak them more and more over time. This, because you will then have the option to see how well they worked in the first place, and maybe a tweak isn't even necessary!

- Goalkeepers can generally have more intense training than outfield players. But, beware of injuries.

- Speaking of injuries: even the in-game tips advice you to keep track of what kind of injuries you get. A lot of pulled hamstrings in training? Reduce Aerobics a little bit.

I hope this will inspire some people to create their own schedules and try them out a little bit, or if not just to understand a bit more how training works in the game.

I might add to this later, and if anyone has any opinions, as I said, let me know and I'll consider tweaking this.

I know this is for FM 09, but I'll mention my Werder side on 08. Very good so far, 2. season, I'm in the knockout phase of CL against Valencia. Drew the first one away, 1-1. I sold 2 of my best players, Diego and Mertesacker, but I'm managing quite well without them.:icon_mrgreen: David Jones from Derby is class.

Gonna start a new game, the current one has gone too slow unfortunately,

gonna reduce the amount of playable leagues or something.

Learned alot about the mechanics of the game, gonna try not falling into the trap of buying too many players and stifling growth of the team etc.

Right then.
First up, go to:
....\football manager 2009\data\db\900\lnc\all and delete Everything in that file.

Next up go to:
....\football manager 2009\data\updates\update-910\db\910\lnc\all and delete everything in that file.

Next, the lovely folks at sortitoutsi.net made a file for you, get it here:

Download it and save to your desktop.
Then copy it to both folders you've just deleted it files from. Start a new FM save, and not only will players names and stuff be fixed, it also gives the correct names for a load of competitions. Very useful
