The prequels were awful. Really, really, really awful. On their own they're about average and forgettable but when you consider what they were supposed to be compared to they were just terrible films.

There's no other way to put it except to say that they did absolutely everything wrong. Everything.

Chocolat can be added to this list for me, didn't see the point in it at all. Baffled that it won academy awards.

I saw Phantom Menace maybe about a year after I first saw the originals so at that age I was still hugely into Star Wars and I thought it was amazing. Haven't revisited it since about 2002. Attack Of The Clones is one of the worst films I've ever seen, certainly the worst I've ever seen at the cinema. I only saw Revenge Of The Sith once, when it came out and thought it was pretty decent (Nooooooooooo moment aside).

I'm wary of revisiting them because you have more material on the internet dedicated to what's wrong with them than any other pop culture event in history, I'm content to keep Phantom Menace as part of a happier time when I would have lightsaber fights with my friends using a combination of official merchandise and brushes.

I can't believe the amount of people who said The Godfather trilogy.

Godfather 3 I grant you was the poorest of the three but still good.

Godfather 2 is the greatest movie ever in the history of cinema.

Shawshank is in my top 5 as well.

Most of the films I don't get or like are a pile of * anyway so I'll spare you the list.

It's a story of love, where Donnie goes back in time by 28 days and lets himself be killed by the jet engine in order to save his girlfriend Gretchen. He's mentally ill and suffers from vivid hallucinations.

He actually dies and he does really have a bird. Donnie is extremely intelligent but he's in psychiatry because of his hallucinations. He keeps being manipulated in his visions but an evil giant bunny/man called Frank.

Some of the films listed in this thread are curious... especially that people 'don't get them'. Can understand that, perhaps when it came to a couple of David Lynch's offerings, which, for the uninitiated really can be a major mindf*ck.

Further to my earlier comment, the director that made Donnie Darko was a protege of Lynch, which explains some.

Lynch has the advantage that all great filmmakers have in that he's * insane.

Trying to emulate that kind of madness is about 50% of my job, really.

I recently watched the first 20 minutes of Inland Empire then gave up but stuff like Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Dune and the first series of Twin Peaks were great. I read somewhere before that Twin Peaks wasn't pre planned and was written as he went along. That sort of explained why its ending didn't clear anything up. But I hate his stuff like Eraserhead, it's like he didn't even try to make something watchable. I've just started downloading Lost Highway, I hope that turns out to be decent.

@Padmill: The director's cut of Donnie Darko shows pages from the book The Philosophy Of Time Travel. The pages shown help make the film make a bit of sense.
