Margeret Qualley. She's done some interesting things as an actress, even just this last year. I lowkey liked Drive Away Dolls, while I wasn't a huge fan of Kinds of Kindness. Seems a lot of critics and cinephiles were the other way around, :/

The ending is undoubtedly the weak link/most questionable aspect of the movie. TBH, the Substance is probably the movie from 2024 I've spent more time thinking about than any other, as in thought provoking etc, and the ending I've waivered on, from they just didnt know how to stick the ending, to the ending being like an absurdist extent to ow completely disproportionate, in a film that the story is so much about balance, keeping it, for the end to be so completely out of all concept of balance, mirroring the story it is telling itself, sort of thing.

I think I've got far too much free time to think about stuff like this, lol.

The Truman Show. 3rd time I think

Carrey's best role imo. Loved it. Starting to wonder if we're actually in it and the movie was taunting us :giggle1:

    Highly recommend The Father

Anthony Hopkins plays a man with dementia. The film is shown from the perspective of the person with dementia. Very well done. Fair warning, if you have a family member with dementia you may find this quite upsetting. Brilliant film though.

    Hamilton.

First time for me. My daughter adores it so I watched today but warned her I'm not a fan of musicals and don't be mad if I get bored.

2 and a half hours later I don't think I closed my eyes incase I missed something.

    Top notch.

I was literally the same, it was because of my daughter that I took her to the theatre to see it because she kept going on about it so much, and since then I've listened to the soundtrack of it countless times, from go to woah!

So well written and concieved masterpiece. Just brilliant.

Since David Lynch's passing last week, have been doing a sit through again of all of his movies, from Eraserhead right through to Inland Empire. A true surrealist visionary. Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, The Straight Story etc. Even his version of Dune, even with it's faults and hoeky effects is still worthwhile as a curiousity as much as anything, but it is telling that was really his one and only real mainstream 'Hollywood studio' film, because an auteurs, such as Lynch, does not really fit their mould, and the studio interference on that project is telling, to say the least.

His weather reports during lockdowns were pretty funny, and the interviews he conducted with real people that he met along the way were sometimes a bit dull, sometimes a bit dry, sometimes genuinely funny, but all of them were real, which as a while made the project interesting and worthwhile.

    Rest in peace. :(

About to revisit the entire of Twin Peaks once again - including Fire Walk With Me, which I held off on from doing with his other movies, as wanted to do it as part of this seperate Twin Peaks, but even as a stand alone, it's still good.

Watched * or High Water again the other night. Not often I watch newer films back again but it's a brilliant film. Some films I must have seen dozens of times over the years but not much sticks out so much I'll watch it back again these days.

Looking for some newer stuff to watch so any recommendations welcome.

Kneecap (2024) - one of my
favourite music acts…brilliant film, soundtrack’s class and some good laughs as well.

It’s quite deep and makes you consider language and identity without taking itself too seriously.

The most over-rated pile of garbage that I've sat through in a long time. It's not bad because of it being trans, it's just bad. The writing is atrocious and defies belief, the songs range from meh to dreadful via a detour into cringey. As an overall production it's completely disrespectful to a culture it proclaims to be championing, and there really is nothing all that notable about the direction. Zoe Saldana's performance is by far the best thing about this movie but considering the crap she was handed made the best of it.

Setting aside the recent backlash against Karla Sofía Gascón, and purely based on her performance in the film itself as the titular character is pretty underwhelming, lacks presence and fails to land emotionally. This isnt a trans thing, but at best and being generous to say 'best of a bad bunch', but I can't imagine ehe had a particularly competitive casting process to go through, as there really can't be that many suitable actresses that would've been suitable or considered as alternatives.

It really does beggar belief how this film has generated so many Oscar nominations. I only sat through this because I sit through all of the best picture nominees anyhow, but I really had no idea just how bad this was and cannot more strongly recommend giving this a big miss. Garbage.

    Many Saints Of Newark.

Late to the party with this one....Being a massive Sopranos fan as well.

Aint as bad as i thought it was gonna be to be honest. Thought guy playing Dickie and Michael Gandolfini were good in it...not enough screen time though for Michael though.

    Few strange plot twists.

Thought Junior was terrible along with Silvio to be honest.

Shout out for Vera Fermiga though......I thought she was absolutely stunning playing Lydia...Her mannerisms and accent were utterly fantastic....Best one in it by a distance.

    6/10

This think it would've worked better had they given it a full season - or even a 5-6 episode 'mini-season' to let the story stretch it's legs a bit more, as often the movie felt rushed and partly simply fan service that didnt necessarily fit the story and had they done that (mini-season) they cold;ve done both better than what was ended up with - trying to do both fan service and tell a cohesive self contained story - but falling short because of that.
