If he's going on a free he demands a big sign on fee as well, he will be wanting not far off a transfer fee to sign a contract somewhere.

Which is a card he'd play against Celtic if a genuinely big offer came in. If a bid of £6 million came in and we accepted he'd be demanding a fair slice of it to even consider going, which puts us back to only a few million gained in the bank to lose our current best CB. I just can't see it happening unless we're coasting in the league at that point.

Dont think that's possible mate, unless he has a % locked into his contract.

The buyer club will have to pay the sign on fee if he's bought directly from us in Jan. If he goes on the free market in the summer then he will be able to affectively name his own transfer fee.

It's definitely possible, they're described as loyalty bonuses. If him and his agent are aware the bid from the prospective club is £6 million you can bet your bottom dollar he'll want about half of that, if we refuse then he refuses to do the transfer and waits til the summer to pocket a similar signing-on fee.

Then we have another scenario of potentially downing tools for the last 4 months of the season and causing more dressing room disharmony. Boyata holds all the aces here.

A loyalty fee is a set figure, depending what's left on the contract, is it not? And only comes into play when a club accepts an offer without the player asking for the transfer/submitting a transfer request?

    That's what I thought, anyway.

Some are contract-bound, others are negotiated outwith the set terms of the contract. An example would be when spurs bid £9 million for Alan Hutton and he refused, Murray shat it at the prospect of losing such a big fee and offered a £1 million bonus for him to go.

Boyata and his agent would be demanding similar, if we refuse then he sits tight for 4 months and picks up a signing-on fee in the summer.

Personally i think it's highly unlikely a club will offer £6 million. There's literally no chance of a club offering £6 million to us and £3 million as a signing-on fee to him.

Anyone who believes we will get a penny for boyata is setting themselves up for a good bout of rage come January. I wish I was wrong but he will sign a pre-agreement elsewhere. And leave in the summer. I hate it but that's exactly what will happen am afraid

I could easily, very easily see someone paying 5 mill or even north of that in pure desperation in January..

His performances have been at a steady high since the summer at the world cup as you say and since coming back in had had numerous motm performances..

I don't think we'll be in Europe after Christmas and we'll be needing to sort out the back line with the qualifiers in mind, so can see him going..

He may be happy to sit tight and ride it out 6 month's for a pick of who he wants though..

Could be a good shout. I think it would make sense for Europe, he is big, quick and commanding. Could mould him into the white Wanyama

Ajer is a CM/DM. We play him out of position at CB.

Impossible to say at this stage.

    Especially in modern football terms.

He is quick for a guy that's 6ft 5inch imo. Have you seen him bombing out of defence?

Plus strength and power (which he has in abundance) takes you past players as much as speed does!

Ajer is quicker on the ball than off it, if that makes sense?

Looks quick bombing out with the ball with those big galloping strides, but on the turn can look painfully slow..

I do also think he should be given a first team go in midfield as I think he'd excel and would want to see it just to be sure where he's best, midfield or centre half as he can clearly play both..
