He had his misgivings and the western media love to highlight them. But he kept Cuba for the Cubans. Drove out the US companies and the CIA and kept them out for many years. As said before their education and health care was excellent for such a poor country. But through all this there are families who have lost loved ones at the hands of his leadership. In politics and war, the poor people are always the real casualties.

Is it just an interview? I would love it if they played If You Tolerate This. An amazing song about Internationalists

Just a couple of snippets from the gig, which Fidel loved apparently.

An unforgivable trait in any western leader, funnily enough. Imagine someone saying that they wanted to keep Britain for the British? Or America for Americans? and who drove out foreign companies that were exploiting the local working population?

He never kept Cuba for the Cuban though. People were always welcome to visit and could apply for citizenship if they so desired. What he DID try to do was halt American Imperialism and influence in his country.

Since the 1920's Cuba was an hedonistic gambling resort part run by the Mafia & Batista for the wealthy American tourist.Casinos & prostitition were rife.
At his 1953 trial for the failed attack he led on the Moncada military barracks in eastern Cuba, Castro delivered a radical speech entitled “History Will Absolve Me.” In the speech Castro mentioned the need for an agrarian reform law that would have granted small allotments to landless peasants with compensation to the landlords, and demanded the participation of the workers in the profits (30 percent) of all large industrial, mercantile, or mining concerns, including sugar mills. He promised also that his revolutionary government would nationalize the electricity and telephone monopolies and confiscate the wealth of those who had misappropriated public funds.
    ¡Viva la Revolución!

Don't know if I'd call them oppressed but in a country such as Cuba where internet use is limited to the more wealth off citizens and even then they can only view state approved websites, combine that with the media publishing constant pro government propaganda, I wouldn't exactly call them free. But when you think about it, does anyone in any country actually have freedom?

Have you seen the videos and pictures of when Kim Jong Il died? Reminds me of that a lot.

EDIT: even Tim-Time knows what's up.

All true, however, the ban on information was a reactive move to a proactive American government broadcasting anti Castro propoganda on the airwaves & TV.
Any government would attempt to do the same.
Many faults of the Castro regime can directly be linked to the constant fear of invasion from the US behemoth just of its coast.
Constant fly overs. Infringing of Cuban waters by battle ships. Confiscation of trawlers. I could make a list that would literally make your jaw drop, but I'm not so pedantic.
Suffice to say, Castro wasn't paranoid - they really were out to get him, & boy did they try........ & fail.
