always thought the guy was a hero

but people should always remember he did do 2 different celtc share issues and he couldn't have done it without the tons of cash given freely by thousands of celtic fans.
Fans that didn't give a toss about how much there share was worth in reality, they just wanted to help Celtic

Hero.also he wasn't the only person to make money from selling their shares a lot of supporters also made a huge profit on their initial 600 pounds investment (that he allowed them to pay in installments)

Mc Cann arrived with his Five Year plan, he also guaranteed the money owed at the time to the bank. Yes he organised the re-building of Celtic Park and sent Mr Farry down the road at the SFA over the late registration of Cadette. However please don't under-estimate the part that the Celtic supporters played in his success, without the support of the Celtic supporters and their financial backing nothing would have been achieved.

Mc Cann had two Share Issues floated in his time at Celtic, both were totally over-subscribed, meaning that he was very clever in gathering together the funding for the new Celtic Park without actually having to fund it personally, he was the focal point for real fans who wanted to financially support their club.

David Murray tried to do the same with The Huns, for all their claims of being loyal through and through it ended up with Murray having to personally having to un-write nearly 90% of these shares, so much for putting your money where you mouth is Huns.

So to conclude, yes Fergus was certainly a genius in terms of his financial awareness, whereas Murray was an absolute clown giving Advocaat £76 Mil to waste during his reign at Ibrox, today we still still see the legacy of these actions. Fergus knew the Celtic supporters would rally behind their club if someone was prepared to channel all their financial support into one single dream, whereas Murray was hounded out by his loyal supporters, so you can see Wee Fergus was an astute businessman, but he also knew his club much better than his greatest rival !!!

    neither hero nor villian

This just about sums up my position. Thanks to chu for opening this thread. Most comments are commonsense. Feel that if Fergus had not invested others would have. Brian Dempsey was also a big part of the rescue.
The stadium needed to be built and was vital for Fergus to make his profit. This was helped with £11m share issue in 1995 which was oversubscribed by us the fans.
He used his business acumen to improve the club and make a profit.

Overall I take ma bunnet off tae thank the bunnet.

Fergus is a Celtic Hero that done what he did for the money.

Of course he was in it for the money; he is a very astute businessman. However that does not stop him from being a hero.

He took a dying, ravaged club and restored it to greatness.

The Bunnet is without doubt a Celtic Hero.

    fans are heroes

Well said magic. He would never have managed it without the fans. This was his astuteness. He knew the fan base that could take 130,000 to hampden v Leeds could fill a 60 000 stadium and buy shares.
Is Desmond Dermott any less a hero?

he's a bit of both, but crucially,he was the only one to put his his money where his mouth was when it mattered,a man of principle who, despite media ridicule the knighted david murray will never recieve a fraction of,put a few people in their place, most notably removing jim farry from office, al always have a soft spot for the bunnet

People forget that the only way he was going to make any money was if he invested heavily in the club which he did, suffice to say if an owner isnt making any money it probably means the team is *. I met him at the game in Boston when he stuck around to sign autographs

McCann, was deffo into fills his pockets, he told u so when he arrived, he said he'd stay 5 years then bale out, he told us exactly how much profit he would walk away with, one thing anyway he was honest, cant deny him that. I will always be gratefull to him for putting in his money, when without it, we woulda bin buried by the multi-national bankers without hesitation, and I applaud him for leaving us the legacy of one of the worlds finest stadiums, and for putting us on the right track financialy, but i totally detested the same wee haemoroid for the way he treated people, remember big jock's words " football would be nothing without the fans", think how much a fan Tommy Burns was, and how he treated him, think of how he fecked up Paulo, remember the horse trading with Paulo, who was it Jock brown swapped him for ? A helluva lot of people in high profile jobs within Parkhead, with past Rangers links, and Masonic links, his plan to replace the four leafed clover badge, and replace it with a Thistle, to play up the Bhoy's Against Bigotry crap, I'm a fan, a devoted fan, not a bigot, I don't need it rattled into me, not to be a bigot. He stabbed Brian Dempsey in the back too, yet it was Dempsey's nod that got him as he put it " an exciting new venture", remember when he barred out the Lisbon Lions, barring their free entry into Paradise, his treatment of people really scunnered me, MY VERDICT = THANKS FERGUS, BUT GLAD TO SEE THE BACK OF YOU.

He told it how it was ,,a 5 year plan which he said he would leave with a profit ,he promised a Fantastic Stadium ,he done that ,basically a man of his word but a hard man to deal with but also a man who challenged the SFA and made them look like mugs ,which they were ,Hail the wee man.

spot on with him as you say , he took them to town, an wee weasel face SQUEAKY voiced Jim Parry had to resign, because of the Cadette registration eh, lift my bunnet aff to him for it too, but still hated the way he treated people who were the backbone of the club, infact it's just came back to me, ....... remember how he treated Davie Hay, a true Celtic legend, was a stalwart as a player for us, a manager that gave us his all, a scout that unearthed the likes of your CADETTE, VANHOOIDONK, DICANIO, yet the wee rat thought he had the right to treat Davy Hay like a bit of dirt on his shoe, I remember at Eastend Park, second last game of the season, when we coulda won the 10 in a row, Davy Hay was sitting near me in the stand, with a celtic scarf on, supporting his team, despite wee ferret face rumpin the boot aff Davy's chuckies only weeks before. As I say thanks for what you done for us financialy, but not forgetting the backing we (the fans) gave you to do it, Thanks for a lot, but happy goodbye's fergus
