agreed, no disrespect but the guy that made this viral will be getting a fortune for all this and it's basically a lost cause. it seems to be in those countries that even if joseph kony does get captured/killed, another will rise and the situo will be similar,

This campaign has gained so much attention due to a filmmaker and his video being a powerful marketing tool. It makes the viewer identify with the cause (by manipulating the viewer's emotions) and then provides steps to take action (whether or not these actions are successful is another story). For many people it activates an idea in their heads that acting upon this campaign will help them to be their ideal self; helping others, changing the world. And part of the message in the video is to pass the video on- which makes it popular.

I don't have any issues with the cause. But I would like to know exactly where my money would be going to, should I donate it. I would like to know that whatever action plan would ensure the safety of the children and of the Ugandan people in the future.

There are a lot of world issues that need to be addressed, but aren't marketed so well. Everyone can identify that children being abducted and forced into an army is wrong. Many other issues aren't as one-sided. But perhaps if this Kony project fares well, the makers of this film will move on to another cause, or it will inspire others to approach world issues in a similar manner.

EDIT: some good reads on the topic

    Likewise.

This is the first time I've seen this info about the charity, their dubious finances and their funding of military organisations.

But it honestly doesn't surprise me.

Soon as I saw the title "Everyone Please Watch This" I guessed correctly what this thread would be about. I've already seen the first section of the vid on YouTube. But I only watched the first couple of minutes, and then went away to do my own research into Joseph Kony - because from the start I had a strong feeling that the video maker was trying to manipulate my emotions, rather than giving me the facts.

The production values are those of an advert, not a documentary. And I'm not surprised it cost a million dollars to make. I'd would be interested to know who funded it...

I'm glad Obama has stated he is going after Kony, and perhaps the video has played a positive role in bringing the issue to public attention. But I won't be contributing to their coffers, because I don't like to think I might be funding paramilitary groups.

I'm a lot happier contributing to reputable charities like these guys - :50:

YouTube still chock full of uncritical hysteria over the Kony 2012 vid.

Human beings scare me sometimes. We need so badly to believe in something, that when we find a something to believe in, our reason and critical faculty goes straight out the window. Next thing we know we're funding paramilitaries in another continent... or rounding up the Jewish folks next door...

funny you should mention that, earlier today I was thinking about Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will after I watched this Kony 2012 thing.

It's a strange film to watch now, with the hindsight of history. It means something so different than it did then.

That shot near the start, with the shadow of the plane advancing across the ground. For me it's like a metaphor for propaganda. Like we're so busy watching the show, we don't see the plane with Hitler in it up above us. Only a shadow, on the film.

its a lot of bollox and people should do a bit more research into it rather than believing this invisible children or whatever they are called who are simply using it to make money and raise awareness of themselves and only show you one side of the story and even that doesn't provide you with a lot of facts

Can't stop laughing at these three pictures.:56::56::56:

I hate how this has almost become fashionable.

Can just imagine * walking about with their 'KONY 2012' bracelets on when really they couldn't give a * about the cause. Poppy mark II.
