    That's treating it with mirth, Mourinho gets rankled when the press suggest the Shield isn't a proper trophy.

    Benitez finished third when winning it with Chelsea, it wasn't a qualifying route for the CL so you can't really compare the situations.

    Dunno what to make of it, don't see how them congratulating their biggest rivals on a win does anything.

    As insensitive as it sounds, even Jake Humphreys constantly referring back to how 'this win for United will lift the people of Manchester and England'....bollocks IMO.

    That's fair enough, but in my opinion it's completely unfair for United to be in the CL next season. Do they have to go through any qualifiers or are they straight in?

    They finished sixth in their league. No way they should be in the Champions League next season. Bad enough having 4th place in England going into the play-offs, now you have 6th place going in as well because they want a completely different competition.

    Of course they won't be back. They don't have the money to be back, just as any club outside Enland/Spain/Germany etc. Even if we would win the * thing next year, we're not back. We can't (And Ajax) afford it.

    To me a 'treble' can only ever be a combination of domestic league, primary European competition and primary domestic cup competition.

    Yeah, it certainly devalues the spot somewhat. From UEFA's perspective if they didn't have the CL spot on offer they know the rich clubs wouldn't take the tournament seriously enough, thus devaluing it in the eyes of commercial partners. It's all financial.

    Neither of them should be anywhere near the Champions League. However, winning a tournament should not grant you entry to a more prestigious tournament.

    The winners of the Europa League should be automatically entered into the next Europa League campaign, regardless of where they finish in their domestic league. That makes sense.
