    I don't think they've used them since the 1950's.

Wasn't all that impressed with Germany tonight. They looked good in midfield but they badly lacked a spearhead up front. Someone to lead the line and run in behind the opposition's defence. If they are to win the tournament I think they need to get Mario Gomez back in the starting eleven.

A few solutions to find for Germany. Don't see Gotze being the answer as the advanced attacker and although Howedes didn't really put a foot wrong, I think he contributed to the ineffective performance of Muller tonight. Play seemed to filter down the left more often than not, whether it was by design or default is another thing.

If they are going to use the false 9 method, then I think Muller would be ideal for the role.

Ball retention tonight was impressive and it was with attacking intent for the majority. Although it did look 2nd half that they looked to entice the Ukrainians out from the defensive formation they had, by playing more passes in deeper areas.

I can remember the BBC pundits having a laugh at the Germany manager, they joked about his attire, and that he and his Staff looked like an old boy band, then Germany won the World cup whilst England failed to make it out of the group stages, who's laughing noo :icon_mrgreen:

Wee Bellamy and Lothar Matthaus in the studio here, nice to see something a bit different.

I just googled Lothar Matthaus as I remember him having an odd managerial career. He's coached club sides in Austria, Serbia, Brazil and Israel, as well as the Hungarian and Bulgarian national sides.

Just saw ITV are showing a little interview with O'Neil and Keane. It's odd seeing Roy Keane doing anything but snarling and saying other people aren't good enough.

What a player he was in his day though, absolutely brilliant footballer.

I used to have the Germany strip with his name on the back, purchased from a looky looky in Spain :56:
