Am I missing something or have you totally misinterpreted what he said?

At no point did he attempt to devalue the Europa League or suggest that they would refuse to participate. He merely suggested that he would rather qualify for Europe on merit than via the back door.

I'm growing increasingly exasperated with the idiotic, tribal nature of football fans who let the colour of another man's jersey poison their critical faculties.

As others have pointed out many of the English clubs and various media sources are quite happy to slate the Europa League(wonder if that will change should Chelsea make the final). They deem it a distraction from "playing in the biggest league in the world" and even Swansea City were complaining about having to play in the competition through winning the League Cup. While the likes of Swansea may struggle with being able to rotate the squad for playing Thursday then Sunday; bigger teams like Liverpool et al have more of a sizeable squad to do so.

I can understand why people are seeing this as the EPL clubs being arrogant and the cynical side of me thinks the same with regards to Liverpool (with Rodgers using the "Fair Play" route as a disguise).

While the Fair Play route is a bit farcical, its just as farcical as giving 4 places for teams from certain leagues to enter the Champions League. Meanwhile respective Champions of their leagues get to play 3 qualifying rounds or more.

The reason people don't like Liverpool is because the majority of their fans are notoriously arrogant and deluded.

Once they stop doing that, you'll just become another mid-table side to the rest of us :50:

I'm pretty sure Rogers has said it before though.

Don’t forget to include Martin O’Neill in that list.

All this shows you is how money rich the EPL/CL is and how important this is to clubs as opposed to success in the second rate European tournament.

Sir Alex Ferguson has branded Manchester United's withdrawal from the FA Cup as "a catastrophe."
United opted to take part in the inaugural World Club Championship in Brazil to help England's ill-fated 2006 World Cup bid.

Ferguson now admits the move was "without question a catastrophe."

But he also revealed United faced no choice after being strongly pressurised by both the Football Association and the Government to take part, so that German champions Bayern Munich did not take United's place and score political points.

Ferguson admits he was then outraged by the FA and Government's subsequent lack of support for United, who had legend Sir Bobby Charlton as a member of the bid committee, after the decision to pull out of the FA Cup sparked mass public uproar.

United legend Charlton - key figure in 2006 bid
"The pressure applied to persuade us to take part in Brazil was so strong we were made to feel it was a patriotic duty to go to South America," Ferguson.

"Perhaps we should not have been too surprised to find that the men from the FA and Government who orchestrated that pressure somehow faded into the background, and behaved like mere bystanders once the media fastened on to the issue and it became clear that the absence of the trophy holders from the oldest knockout competition in football was being treated as a national scandal.

"All the quiet promises of official backing evaporated and we were left on our own as the convenient villains of the piece."

The notion I would belittle the competition is crazy
    Sir Alex Ferguson
"The truth is that I feel deeply for the FA Cup and the notion I would willingly belittle the competition is crazy.
"To the best of my knowledge, initially nobody at Manchester United was interested in going to Brazil.

"I have to say I was disappointed by how the FA and Government reacted, or failed to react, to the trouble their intervention stirred up around our heads. When all the flak was flying nothing was heard.

"How could they distance themselves like that?"

Please define * and REAL fans,

They are the best team in the EPL and have fans who give great support especially away, granted there will be at least twenty thousand knobs at OT

If you are in the Europa league then you must play the fixtures, simple. Some other teams find it distracting but they knuckle down anyway.

Slightly OT but there was Celtic fans at a Liverpool reserve game.

Getting in through the fair play route ? Laughable when the club stands by a player who deliberately sinks his teeth in to another players arm !!really fair that ...

A real fan, is someone who supports one club, not 3.

A real fan, is someone who sticks by their club, not supports some break away phoenix club because they dont like the new owners.

A real fan, does not use football as a means for violence, like so many do at the stretford end.

A real fan, does not eat prawn sandwiches.

Where was all this mock outrage when e.g. Roy Keane ended Alfe Inge Haaland's footballing career with a tackle?

You'd think he'd killed someone the way some of you jessie biscuits go on
