He's similar to how Van Persie was at 23.

Sturridge has 28 goals in 99 Premiership games, Van Persie had 21 goals in 72 Premiership games at the same age. Strike rates almost exactly the same 0.28 and 0.29, Sturridge's probably better in terms of goals per minute since 50 of his 99 games have been as a sub.

Van Persies 3 season in England ages 21-23 he played 110 games and scored 34, Sturridge's Last 2.5 seasons in England so far he has played 94 games and scored 31 goals.

Reina's been * for * years. I've been saying this since like 2010 and only now people are seeing it :31:

Forster is genuinely a better goalie than Reina now.

He'll be a Jermain Defoe standard player at best imo, good player but i dont see him becoming a world class footballer.

Dont know, id say he has a lot more to his game, strength, technique etc all hes lacking has been consistancy probably due to him being a bit moody. If that wears off he could become a 25-30 a season goalscorer with a good allround game.

The stats are interesting in comparing strike rates, but in terms of style of play, technical ability and all round approach he is nothing like RVP in my opinion.

Valdes just made a world class double save. I think Valdes is quite good tbh not absolutley amazing but a good alround keeper, makes the odd mistake but they're usually from trying to play the ball from the back which is just how he has to do it at Barca. At another team he wouldnt have that problem as most keepers are allowed to just punt it.

Fair enough, dont think he'll be world class by any stretch although your stats make your original statement less crazy than i thought it was at first .

Yeah Van Persie is more technical but Sturridge is good technically too, not Van Persie like but better than most English players and Sturridge is quicker and stronger but Van Persie isnt that slow or weak.

Which is why I think saying he could be the next Van Persie is misleading, the stats make the situations seem similar, but the real players themselves - technique, style of play - push the comparison further apart imo. Like Jamesy, I can't envisage him getting far past a Defoe level striker. That said though, if he manages to become a 20+ goals per season striker he'll have gotten himself to a level above Defoe for me - Defoe the English media-christened "goal machine" who struggles to score at a rate of half his games pretty much every season of his career bar a spell at Bournemouth and a couple of other seasons here and there :smiley-laughing002:. *.

We'll just have to wait and see, id say he's already better than Defoe though. Sturridge has a good allround game, you either have that or dont and he does and Defoe doesnt.

Since the 2010-11 season Defoe has 25 goals in 71 Premiership games and Sturridge has 23 goals in 66 Premiership games(actually has 23 in his last 53), so theyre scoring at a similar rate but Sturridge is just allround wise 2 levels above, better touch, pace, strength, technique, everything.

I mean Defoe level, not Defoe type. He's a different type of player from Defoe obviously, but its not out the question to think he might not get to a higher level than Defoe has (i.e. Defoe's level is a top 4-chasing Spurs side and England call-up's regularly, Sturridge has technically already played for better teams than a top 4-chasing Spurs one but wasn't in any meaningful way a big part of them, so starting again at Liverpool is a very good move for him. If they end up back to challenging for the top 4 in the next couple of seasons then that will be round about the level Defoe reached, he might get a move to a better team/level or might end up staying with Liverpool if they get back to being a really big team). Right now I don't think it's a true statement to say he's at Defoe's level quite yet. Not only because Defoe's actually having a good season but because Sturridge's career is only really about to start properly and he's had a decent few games. You're right though - we'll have to wait and see what he turns out like. He's got good potential, but again it's very much not in the RVP mould in anything other than a statistical manner :50:

today 55 years ago what was destined to be a great team, perhaps the greatest united has ever produced, was dismantled by tragedy in Munich

I've always wondered what football would be like just now if that didn't happen, watched a few programs on them... they were going to be a legendary team.

To come back in 68 and win the European Cup was something that should not have been possible after that.

Paco Gento, the real madrid player said in his biography that they thought that united side would be their replacement at the top of european football for years to come. bobby charlton, who played against pele and beckenbauer said that duncan edwards could've been at that level if not better. But all those football stories pale in comparison to the human tragedy. Particularly theres something deeply moving about young men who have that expression of hope and endless possibilities in their faces cut short because of tragedy.

this photo in particular, they look so happy, so full of life. All that magical youth that could never explore the infinite possibilities of life, its tragic. And there were others who were in that plane and died and people tend to forget a bit.
