"Isle of Wight Council has issued warnings of possible further ground movement in Bonchurch, Ventnor, after experiencing one of the largest landslides ever recorded on the Isle of Wight and the south coast of Britain last month.

On December 10, 2023, the Isle of Wight witnessed a significant geological event when a major landslide occurred in Bonchurch, Ventnor, affecting an area of about 42 ha (approximately 104 acres).

This incident, displacing approximately 14 million cubic meters (nearly 494 million cubic feet) of material, stands as one of the largest landslides in modern history for both the Isle of Wight and the south coast of Britain.

As a result, around 20 properties near Leeson Road were evacuated due to the “devastating” landslide, which caused significant parts of the cliff edge along the road to collapse."

"Workers have entered the final stages of demolition work of the National Trust Cafe at Birling Gap, East Sussex.

With the former hotel being threatened by cliff erosion due to its precarious position, work has been done to demolish part of the cafe.

Demolition work will see what was once the old former hotel reception and bedrooms built between 1878 and 1909 torn down forever as the sea encroaches and frequent chalk cliff falls make the building unsafe for use.

Birling Gap is the National Trust's second most popular venue in Britain. The iconic beauty spot is loved and known by many with over 350,000 visitors a year, but cliff erosion has left it precariously close to falling into the sea."

"Kevin Jordan’s home is being demolished leaving him homeless and without compensation. Recent severe storms and rising sea levels had left it dangerously close to the cliff edge in Hemsby, Norfolk. Kevin had bought his home 14 years ago and professional estimations said it would be safe for around 100 years, but coastal erosion has increased far faster than expected."

And those videos were taken only 9 days apart (with a single storm in between)
Illustrates the pace of erosion of the coastline:

"A woman who moved to the East Yorkshire coast for its "beautiful views" fears it is already too late to stop erosion claiming her home.

Gemma Brown says the North Sea is encoraching "closer and closer" on her house in Ulrome near Hornsea.

Ms Brown, who has lived there for eight years, says recent storms have increased the threat.

She told ITV News: "I still reckon we've got a few more years but if it's taking it how it has in the last couple of months we've got less time."

Ms Brown, who is originally from Leeds, said the area used to be buzzing with cafés and amusements.

Now she says it is quickly becoming a "ghost area" as local caravan parks come under threat due to erosion."

"The effects of coastal erosion have been captured in a striking series of photos.

Simon Downer, from Loddon in Norfolk, captured pictures of the same spot between Kessingland and Covehithe near Lowestoft over a six-year period.

His images all feature a Second World War pill box which, when they are put together, shows its changing position on the coastline over time."

"The 11-mile route runs along the Isle of Wight's south-west coastline and offers "a wealth of sweeping ocean views and memorable country landscapes", according to the tourism body - but it suggests going soon as "erosion along the coast could see parts of the road disappear"."

"They are living on the edge, quite literally, after recent storms took them 30ft closer to the sea in just two weeks. Residents in Ulrome and Skipsea in East Yorkshire, have watched up to eight football pitches of land vanish over the years.

And experts fear the loss of whole villages in the future, on the fastest eroding coastlines in Europe. Things are so bad the public are being warned to stay away from cliff edges on the East Yorkshire coastline after several “significant” cliff collapses recently - even in the seaside resort of Bridlington."

"She said they had moved in 2021 from West Yorkshire and knew what the problems were but fell in love with the “amazing” view and the incredible sunsets. “I’ve had an eviction notice for a month’s time but I’m not going."

"In Skipsea the situation is even more bleak as many of the 20 residents have just weeks left in their homes before they are forced out. A resident, called Jo, 52, who did not wish to give her surname, said she felt “bullied” by the local council to move out."

"The East Yorkshire coastline recedes by an average of six metres a year, with some areas losing 12 to 15 metres. Dr Eddie Dempsey, a lecturer in structural geology at the University of Hull, says the East Yorkshire coast, which is a combination of clay, silt and sand, makes it especially susceptible. Dr Dempsey said climate change was causing more frequent storms and more rainfall which weakens the sediment, causing cliffs to collapse."

“When the sea hit the cliff bottom it would shake the house , we used to sleep in the bedroom furthest from the sea,” he remembers. “I’ve worked this land since I was a kid. There used to be a road in front of it but that’s gone now.

“It will soon be eating away at my land. It’s frightening the sea. The only way to stop it is a barrier from Bridlington to Spurn Point but the Government and the country has no money, we’re broke.”

He said recently during the storms he had to help move one man’s caravan after he woke up to find his home four feet closer to the sea. “It’s criminal what’s happening but you cannot beat mother nature,” the farmer says. Some years it will take nowt but I think it will be bad this year. The land is sodden, wet through. And when it (the land) goes, it goes. It doesn’t give you any warning.”

"A clifftop park has been cordoned off and a pub evacuated over fears of an imminent cliff collapse.

Police were called to Rylstone Gardens and the Fisherman's Cottage in Shanklin, Isle of Wight, shortly after 11:00 GMT.

Isle of Wight Council said "ground movement and cracks" had been spotted along the clifftop."

"See the crack in the concrete?’ someone says. ‘There’s nothing underneath holding it up.’

The frangible Norfolk coastline has been fighting a losing battle against erosion for centuries, and in recent years Hemsby in particular has become a byword for the misery caused by loss of homes and dreams to the sea.

"Last year alone 12 houses were condemned and demolished and on the day I visit, radio and TV reporters, along with a few rubberneckers, are on hand to record the latest disaster."

The Climate Change Committee (formerly the Committee on Climate Change) was set up by the government in 2008 as an independent advisory body. Its 2018 report, ‘Managing the coast in a changing climate’, estimated that nearly 9,000 properties in the UK were at risk from coastal erosion, while 520,000 were located in areas with a 0.5 per cent or greater annual risk from coastal flooding."

"Homeowners in East Yorkshire said they had seen 'six van lengths of land' disappear over the last 15 years, while one woman in East Sussex has already lost 25 yards of her garden just four years after buying her four-bedroom property."

"Dr Hiteva has slammed the local council for failing to accommodate her and her family despite being given a Prohibition Order telling them to leave the property, which they are still providing mortgage payments for.

Terrified owners of a £460,000 house in Foxgate, East Sussex, revealed how more of their dream home is being lost every day.

Dr Hiteva told The Mirror: 'It was 9pm on Valentine's Day and it was really windy and stormy. I heard the crunching sound of trees and I went outside.

'I went outside and there were cracks appearing on the floor, opening up around our feet. I raised the alarm. The next morning I got up and it was even worse, parts of the patch were just gone completely.

'From then onwards the landslide started developing very quickly. It ate straight through the bank, whole trees have gone.

'It's eaten through 25 metres of our garden, about 25 trees, we used to have a swimming pool but half of it has gone now. Every day a little bit more goes.

'This was supposed to be our forever home. It's so horrifying; it's horrifying because you're watching your home disappear every day."

"The incident happened on Wednesday, February 28, near Rushey Hill Caravan Park with the damage cutting across a footpath.

The new photographs show the extent of the fall, as well as the signs put up on Monday, March 4, to warn people about the unstable cliff edge.

An East Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “The recent cliff fall at Peacehaven has affected the King Charles III England Coast Path, which is a National Trail."

"Coastal erosion in Bembridge has led to the closure of a popular footpath that runs between Whitecliff Bay and Forelands.
In recent weeks, the BB10 coastal path has deteriorated to the point where it is now unsafe, forcing the Isle of Wight Council to act.

The section of coastline running between Bembridge towards Culver Down has seen numerous footpath closures in recent years, but the current situation has resulted in a significantly greater area being closed to the public."
