Easter 1916 rising thread.

Visited Kilmainham Jail when I was in my early teens and it had a profound effect on me. To see the courtyard where the brave young men of the uprising where shot by the British army and treated so badly made me think about the bravery those Irish freedom fighters had and the savagery of the British army which has righty made me a bitter man

 

I was there for my birthday a few years ago.



I wanted to pay my respects to James Connolly


I’m proud he’s an Edinburgh man just like me.

 

Did you feel the same way about the place as I did. It was summer when I went and it was still cold and damp and you could only imagine what it must have been like for the prisoners in there knowing that some of them where going to be tied to a chair and taken out by the "brave" British soldiers and shot.

 

Yeah I did mate.



I was there with my dad and he didn’t know Connolly was from Edinburgh


I ended up having to give him a short history lesson about the rising

 

Visited this memorial whilst visiting relations in Carrick.

 

My gran lived through that and once told me 2 of her older cousins had fought in it. Don’t know their names or if they were in the GPO or one of the other sites of battle but she said she was never more proud.
