I see both sides, I agree that we can't use fossil fuels forever, but I feel as though the government could do more to incentivise people to buy electric cars.

They are pretty * expensive, as far as I know there aren't grants or help to buy or anything like that available, other than help with charging ports and free parking in certain areas.

I feel as though the government should be doing more to help us ease into the electric transition. Could our government sell our diesel cars to countries who don't give a * about the carbon footprint, say the UK government offer me 5 grand or whatever for my motor, they punt it, and then I get a leg up to buy an electric car.

    * knows, had a wee swatch on auto trader and the cheapest electric car 25 miles from my hoose was about 9 grand. Second hand cars, a brand new electric car is anyway upwards of 22k or so.

    To me that's mad expensive.

They are definitely getting cheaper. The Dacia Spring is a new super mini that costs around 15k- that is bound to be a game changer. There is a Volvo SUV around 35k which seems to be winning lots of awards, and the MG4 which is a regular family hatchback size and costs around 27k which isn't too different to a new petrol hatchback.

The luxury brand EVs seem to depreciation massively but look overpriced to start with. But I expect prices for mid market EVs will become less of an issue from now compared to even a few years ago.

    * can’t even keep our roads in a decent state and you expect them to be able to help the people who want to buy an EV.

Fiat announced they’re to restart manufacturing 500cc petrol car as people, especially older ones just don’t want to drive electric cars

22k for a new car these days isn't really that expensive. Car prices have sky rocketed in the past few years. Used car prices have gone through the roof too. I think the 15k Dacia is an amazing price though, the Sandero is 14k and that's a manual.

not going to get an electric just yet, I just don't think the infrastructure is there yet, but I think it will be much better in 5 years. Where I live needs to get in gear, it's okay if you live in a house but half the people who live in the borough live in flats. We generally drive in the UK for holidays so unsure how easy that would be, how many stops we would have to make and how easy it would be to charge when we go on holiday to the * end of nowhere.

22k is on the really lower end tbf, and that's still second hand actually. The average Scottish full time wage is around 28-34k, take home is probably closer to 20k. 22k is a lot of dough, to a wee * like me anyway. Hopefully in time the infrastructure will catch up to where it needs to be.

3ltr diesel, are you a white van man buster? I’m thinking of one as a retirement present for myself, large van, put mattress, stove, sink and leisure battery and I could travel around Scotland in between Celtic games, heaven.

The cost of a new car has gone up a lot recently. A decent model Ford focus now goes for around 25k so it's only a couple grand more for something like a MG4 which is the same size and EV.

If you can get one through salary sacrifice (the majority of EVs are) then it can be quite a bit cheaper than a petrol car over a few years.

Not going to lie, we have two and we * love them. Massive fuel savers. I charge mine at work as well, which is free. Lucky to be in a decent financial position to have them but highly recommend them.

Some more NetZero madness that no one can seriously defend.

Penalising car manufacturers because people don't want to buy their EVs is insane.

They are too expensive, impracticable for a lot of people, a possible insurance write-off for the smallest of bumps and repairs take forever as they are so dangerous to work on. Not to mention the depreciation.

Renault CEO says sector could face billions in fines as EV sales slow

PARIS, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Europe's autos industry could face fines of 15 billion euros ($17.4 billion) for carbon emissions due to slowing demand for electric vehicles, Renault CEO Luca de Meo said on Saturday.
Automakers face tougher EU CO2 targets in 2025 as the cap on average emissions from new vehicles sales falls to 94 grams/km from 116 g/km in 2024.
"If electric vehicles remain at today's level, the European industry may have to pay 15 billion euros in fines or give up the production of more than 2.5 million vehicles," de Meo told France Inter radio.

"The speed of the electric ramp-up is half of what we would need to achieve the objectives that would allow us not to pay fines," de Meo, who is also president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), said of the sector.
Exceeding CO2 limits can lead to fines amounting to 95 euros per excess CO2 g/km multiplied by the number of vehicles sold.
That could result in penalties of hundreds of millions of euros for large carmakers.

"Everyone is talking about 2035, in 10 years, but we should be talking about 2025 because we are already struggling," he said.
"We need to be given a little flexibility. Setting deadlines and fines without being able to make that more flexible is very, very dangerous."

Manufacturers, dealerships, garages and petrol stations could all refuse to cooperate.
Parts sellers could refuse to supply parts for all emergency vehicles and politicians cars could be blacklisted so the MPs cars, both family and business, won’t get serviced or MOT’d.
If they all combined they could force government to drop their plans.
