Former Celtic man Dedryck Boyata has claimed that Brendan Rodgers and Chris Sutton forced him to leave the club.

The defender, now at Hertha Berlin, opened up on his time in Glasgow to Nedum Onuoah, on the ‘Kickback with Nedum‘ podcast.

After a Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens in 2018, Brendan Rodgers claimed Boyata was fit, and could have played [Scottish Sun]. In actuality, according to Boyata, a hamstring niggle from the World Cup prevented Boyata from helping his team-mates.

Brendan Rodgers had an interview where he said “it’s difficult to win games when we have fit players at home, who don’t want to help the team. From this interview, Chris Sutton was so hurtful. Honestly, he was so hurtful that I wrote down everything he said. He said something like “you need to kick him out of the team!”

“At that moment, I just felt… I spoke to every single player about my situation. The captain, the goalkeeper… these guys were affected by the situation. They wanted to go to the Champions League. They said “we need to find the best situation for Dedryk!”.

From that moment, I was finished. I came back the day after and went to speak to [Rodgers]. “How can you do this to me? How can you put me in the situation? You know everything that was going on, you were aware of everything”. He protected himself, he protected the team, and I was the bad guy.

“From [then] on, it [was] finished.”
“I cannot speak for them, but I really did not think they expected me to go to the World Cup, or for me to play. So I go to the World Cup, and I have one year left. So we ended up having a good World Cup, finished 3rd. Come back to Celtic. I had very good relations with Brendan Rodgers

“I got mixed up in a situation I’ve never been in. [I had] all these teams coming from left to right.

“That was the year the transfer window was closing earlier than usual. So what happened is, I speak with the guys, I speak with the doctors, the coach, about the situation. Yes, I requested a transfer. I said “I have these teams behind me, I don’t know what’s going to happen for me in the future. I need to know what’s going on now.”

“For myself it was a little bit difficult. I have never been in a situation where I am the villain.”

I do remember the game after AEK when he scored the winner and every single player made an effort to congratulate him though. I'm no lover of the board believe me but I genuinely think the rat was causing all sorts of drama and trouble behind the scenes that summer because he wasn't on Arsenal's list to replace Wenger.

Boyata comes across like a bit of a * though

Boyata’s agent came out and said he wasn’t willing to jeopardise his future.

Rodgers deflecting like he did a lot when under fire, player was obviously not feeling 100% and Rodgers tried to get him to play anyway and he said no at the risk of further injury, the reaction from players a few games later really tells the story, he hung him out to dry in the eyes of the fans, then refused to let him leave, I respect that Boyata got his head down and got stuck in for the remainder of the season after that, and in honesty played quite well, Rodgers on the other hand * off mid season at the first opportunity.

I thought Boyata wanted a new contract at the time. I am skeptical about the injury excuse.

The reaction of the squad to him makes me think he’s bang on the money

When he scored they all pretty much ran up to him to hug him, with Gordon running the length of the field, wasn't a typical celebration.

Boyata is a *. A bombscare who I was glad to see the back of. Always mind a game against the huns at parkhead, couple of minutes to go we were winning 2-1 I think and had used all our subs and Boyata trudges off injured. There was literally about 2 mins left and the big * couldn't see the game out. Summed him up.

Totally agree, along with the Porto bid for Nicham and could have got McGinn in also. What a shambolic sequence of events around the same time. And all because the useless recruitment team did not have replacements lined up, not as if it was a "surprise world cup".

We’ve made far bigger mistakes than that, in the last few years alone.

Boyata, over the piece, was a good signing for us. He’s a far better player than some like to pretend.

Is everyone that leaves the club a rat now? Let’s be honest, no one on here has a clue what happened.
