I genuinely don't think we''ll do badly in the group. Would have liked a top quality centre mid but realistically who were we going to buy? Unless it's another project like Vic (who could turn out like Efe) then we can't really strengthen.

As has been mentioned we're competing against 3 clubs who can probably buy every one of our players and still have cash left over. Only so much we can do, no matter how ambitious.

Using Leicester as an example of spending big to strengthen doesn't really work, they spent * all before they won the league, and even since haven't spent that much.

That isn't the argument at all. The point is when the 3rd seed team has £35m to toy with, it puts into perspective our respective capability in the transfer market.

So the argument is - we will buy appropriate players. But you must understand that we cannot compete with about 100 other clubs out there.

Less than they got for selling Kante, is my point. By our standards yes that's a vast sum, but in England right now it's * all, especially for the Champions!

Spending big doesn't guarantee anything, unless it's on the right player.

No one is saying we need to necessarily spend big. Leicester bought very talented individuals for low money and created a good team. Talented players don't have to be astronomical in value: Virgil, Lustig, Wanyama, Hooper, Ledley were all talented/proven and cost us little. We are just looking for some pedigree. There will be talented Bhoys out in the likes of Croatia, Holland, Portugal, Hungary, Poland (Dortmund benefitted big style here) Belgium, France who will likely be cheap. Much cheaper than England anyway.

    Exactly.

I'd also say that in today's overhyped money crazy market, there's a fine line between a player valued at 30million and a player valued at 5-10million. It all depends on what league he plays in and how wealthy the club who want to buy him are.

Completely agree. I'd like to think Brendan's shopping in England this summer was purely through necessity - he needed people he trusted and knew for the qualifiers and it's payed off.

From now no i'd like to see us return to those foreign "undervalued" markets to sign more like Ajer and Wanyama.

I think our only deals with English clubs in future will be loans like Roberts and getting people on frees when they leave i.e. Kolo

Guys....i pretty much agree with most of the points on here over the last couple of pages and it's because they are DIFFERENT arguments.

Leicester did indeed buy well because at that stage they were under the radar and let's face it anyone going there a year ago was expecting a relegation battle.

I was a bit miffed with the lack of a CM too but i think you've got to have bit of faith/ trust in the management team. I believe they did try and sort something out but for whatever reason it didn't come to fruition. Here's the thing though..i'm * glad they've not gone for some Plan B guy like the past and ended up with another waste of space in the already over-sized squad.

Maybe easier for me to say now that i no longer have ST ticket.

By the by, did anyone actually say the reason we've not bought because we're gonna get humped anyway??

i feel they may hav looked at the quick progress under a new manager and felt happy we hav made the groups ,but realise ,even if we wer to spend 30 40 50 mill these sums probably wont put us into the last 16 ,its in these instancies that you see how big an achievment this was under wee strachan and lenny after .

We've spend about €30M on transfers this summer, mainly on CM Christoph Kramer(€15M) and CB Jannik Vestergaard(€12.5 M).

Though, Kramer was needed as we sold Granit Xhaka for about €45M to Arsenal. :86:

Anyways, it's not always the numbers that are most important but rather scouting and working with those guys.
That's at least what we're doing or have done again, during the last couple of years, with guys like Reus, ter Stegen etc.

Thanks to that new TV deal, every one of those 20 EPL clubs will be in the financial top 30 in Europe.
Comparing yourself to those teams just makes no sense, at least as long as you aren't Bayern, Real, Barca...

Don't see us getting two home draws and we will be lucky to get a home win as well with our group.

Not too sure how many away point we have had but it's not many.

In that group, I'd actually be happy with 4 points - 3 home draws and an away draw. Think that'd put us in EL. But with the strength of the group, even that's a big ask...

I don't think so mate! Hope you're right though!

I think the germans might actually challenge for a top 2 spot in this group...that's how hard i think it is!!!

    Low expectations.
    We deserve better than that.

Think 4 or 5 points would be a great effort given the strength of teams we've drawn

How can we deserve better when we've not kicked a ball? You get what you deserve. We can't feel entitled to anything in this group we are up against 3 top quality sides and we didn't even get a win in Europe last year.

    Answers, you want answers ?
From my point of view it is about expectations based on reality.
We have defeated Barca before in a previous incarnation, it's reasonable and arguable to have expectations that Brendan's Celtic team can defeat Barca at home too, based on that previous reality. And sometimes we don't get what we deserve, despite putting a titanic effort into certain games you can still walk away empty handed for a variety of reason, bad luck, refs, linesmen, unexpected sending offs, the imponderables, unexpected etc.

If we keep seeing the other three teams as 3 top quality sides, without equating the same esteemed tag to ourselves, then I think we are doing ourselves a great injustice by demeaning ourselves in their eyes, and setting them up on some kind of inflated and utopian pedestal.

Expectations, high expectations is what is required going into these games.
    It's all about mindset.
Anything less than six points will be a failure in my opinion.
