It's a set fee if he leaves Scotland so him playing means nothing. He played purely to not risk Idah.

He needed a plan. A 3 year deal with a loan out this window and another in the summer. He comes back and fights for his place.

I throught if a players had played a first team game you get more money and if they have played in a European competition it would be even more as how can a player be a development player if they have champions league experience also its weird that literally a few days before he can sign a pre contract he gets some game time

Our academy is a joke. Develop players, don’t give them an opportunity and then they leave. Pathetic.

    * shambles, again. How many ‘promising’ academy players we’ve lost in the last 5 years?

    Far too many.

There's still folk out there though who will peddle "they'll play if they're good enough".

It is a very worrying trend where we are continually losing our best talent from the academy and they clearly feel they have no future at this club. I hope senior management are looking at this and asking the relevant questions. We need serious changes in the academy to develop and retain the best players coming through the ranks instead of them all clearing off down south. We need the next generation of Calmac and Forrest coming through and making their mark on the first team.

He's not moving away for a chance to play , you think he has a better chance of getting game time at West Ham United ?
We aren't willing to compete with the wages that EPL clubs are willing to pay these youngsters, so we will keep losing them as a result.

In the last 10 years how many players have left out academy and went and played elsewhere and reached a level where you thought, he'd have been a 1st team player?

    Doak??

A player who was in the 1st team picture and * off after 2 games.

100% we should be looking at ourselves in terms of producing players but that wasn't the point i was making. The point you missed is that these kids are far too impatient/greedy/stupid to actually hang around and develop into 1st team players.

Seeing more and more leaving at 17/18 when they aren't even close to being 1st team players and vast majority of them have done * all anyway.

Wages is clearly a factor, but proper youth systems have a route into the first team. Just a plan that teams can point to that shows it's possible to progress.

The last time I mentioned this was end of November against Ross County. 5 0 up at half time at home and instead of having some young talent lined up to give game time to, we bring on Engels, Hatate and Taylor. Game becomes a stroll and finishes 5 0. Meanwhile Celtic B that day are playing Gala Fairydean. What kind of platform is that for young talent.

Ultimately we will always lose some talent to teams paying more. But many more would stay if they actually had a route to playing for celtic.

Regarding West ham in particular, Declan Rice and Ben Johnson came through their youth academy just a few years ago. They currently have a 19 year old academy player who just started in the FA cup against Villa and who made his debut starting in the UEFA conference league at age 17. Compare that to playing every week in Celtic B who beat Stirling University 2 1 today. It's a different world of development.

They just run their youth contracts down , turn 18(at best) and head down to the EPL to sign their first pro deal and earn a small fortune. We aren't willing to be competitive with wages with development players. They earn silly money down there . We're talking about normal folk here who haven't earned anything yet so it's always going to be a huge huge factor.

It’s a good move for him. I don’t see why any promising youngster would stay with us. They’ll never ever get a proper chance at us.

This is all there is to it , though I don't feel as harshly about it as you. They go for the money . Unless we are willing to pay them 5-10 Grand a week at 16,17 and 18 to play against Stirling University for our development sides or to play on loan for Ayr (in the hope they develop into first team contenders eventually ) , than they will * off down south and earn that long before they are first team
ready. We can't/won't compete with the deals they give to kids.

Yeah and for me that comes down to either impatience, greed or stupidity.

Kelly is perfect example, Rodgers rated him and had a clear pathway and role identified for him but he chose to go to Millwall for an extra couple of grand a week.

He's clearly been poorly advised by an agent but even at that he must be proper thick as * to choose Millwall over what he had on offer here.

Ahhh another promising youngster leaving the club.

You'd think with the millions we plow into the youth setup, we'd see some sort of return.

Some smart * will say Tierney or McGregor but both of them made their debuts nearlyeleven years ago.

Do we plough millions into our youth setup?

We have them competing in a joke league in terms of development..

We pay lip service to it bcoz I'm pretty sure having one is a requirement for uefa competitions.

But anytime anyone shows even the slightest bit of talent they are running off to England for cash to waste away in clubs u23 sides.

In it's present state our youth academy is a waste of time and get the impression the club feels the same way..... I mean why else would you have Stephen McManus and Darren Odea in key roles
