Agree with this. It wasn’t a clear and obvious error. There were plenty of other challenges, essentially from the YB’s players, that were of similar bightiness, the ref saw it similar to all the other yellows, so it should have never been overturned.

I love the guy but it's a red all day long. You don't get away with lashing out like that , even if he wasn't trying to hurt the player. No chance Var can look at that and decide not to flag to the ref in my opinion.

The VERY PURPOSE of var is to ensure that all goal, red card and off the ball incidents are looked at to assist the ref.

At full speed I thought the YB player fouled Maeda and then nothing but handbags. When I saw the video I agreed it was a definite red.

As far as I can see var did it's job exactly as intended! :39:

Can't agree on the red, definitely agree that he let a hundred others slide. Don't think it helped Maeda that the ref had spoken to him and another player (same?) only a couple of minutes before for pushing at each other

Yeah that’s won’t have helped, but the ref has seen it and is reffing the game to his standard. It took a lot to get a yellow for a challenge last night, so it obviously stood it would take a lot to get a red too, that’s consistency.

If the ref hadn’t seen it, then sure, but the ref had a clear view and has given a yellow seeing that Maeda has taken a cheeky lash, there was no need for VAR to get involved. Once VAR is involved it puts an enormous amount of pressure for the ref to resist.

If anything both players should have got a red as they both lashed out, I think frustration got the better of him as the YB players were kicking the * out of both wingers all night.
A shame he will miss the Villa game as he could really hurt them with that electric pace.

He was rattled with some of the tackles that were coming in. At a Celtic throw in he pushed a defender in the back as he was time wasting with the ball, very unlike him

He was fouled a ridiculous number of times last night and the ref let their players away with far too much without booking them. Happy to show Kuhn a yellow in the first instance though. Still never a red card, Maeda fouled twice before genuinely attempting to kick the ball round the players leg. If he had connected with studs I'd agree it would be a red. But he hit him without dangerous force with the tongue of his boot. Most embarrassing straight red I've ever seen and don't believe VAR should have gotten involved as it was never a clear and obvious error. Referee had a shocker.

Technically a red as whistle had gone for foul even if very soft, but 100% agree they kicked the * out of him all night without penalty (or penalties), which ultimately led to him lashing out.

If the other guy had kicked Maeda like that EVERY SINGLE PERSON on this forum would say the card was justified - maybe some saying soft, but all would be red!

    * it! Can't take it back now, just put the case it was a brainfart after a load of fouls on him and hope it goes as a single match ban, so he's available for the 2nd leg hopefully...

I can't disagree, he had to go. But I still blame that referee. He allowed their players to kick lumps out of Daizen all night and that's why Daizen lost it. It was like he couldn't find his yellow card where Young Boys were concerned last night.

    Hopefully not.

Don't think his hold up play or ability on the ball is good enough and his finishing is too erraric. It's a gripe of mine with Kyogo so putting Maeda there wouldn't solve it.

It would also defeat the purpose of strengthening the LW as if he was to start most games with say, Jota, who do we have on the bench to come on as a winger?

I'd say it's guaranteed we sign another striker. This side is crying out for someone clinical.

Their right back done a far more blatant kick out down in their corner literally 10 minutes before this incident, I can’t remember if it was Maeda or Valle he targeted but we won a throw in and he tried to kick our player as they ran away from them to take it.

The consistency of use of VAR for these incidents is ridiculous, you either treat the all as off ball unnecessary contact or none of them. Last season we had a Lazio player elbow Hatate clear as day off the ball and no intervention.

Our penalty was soft but Maeda was denied a stone waller earlier when he got infront of his marker and he just shoved him 2 hands on his back to the ground.

Thar fullback done him a couple of times, a sore one in the back too..

He needs to be more clever when getting them back.. :56:

He'll be a massive miss at Villa..

No. The job of VAR is to flag 'clear and obvious' errors. There is no clear and obvious error because the referee saw the foul and gave a yellow.

They are only justified in stepping in if he commits serious foul play or violent conduct. Violent conduct only applies when not challenging for the ball, which he was, so it must be serious foul play. Here are the conditions for determining serious foul play:

"A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."

I didn't see him use excessive force nor endanger the opponent's safety. No lunging, no studs, just a bog standard shin-to-shin foul. There isn't even a case for serious foul play, let alone the intimation that it was clear and obvious.

One of the worst VAR intrusions I've seen.

Just annoys me that the * actually fouled Maeda first and should have seen a second yellow, before the "kick out" from Maeda.

Not gonna lay in to Maeda for it. He knows he was wrong and silly, we know why and how. It is what it is.

But see if the ref done his job properly, he'd have given two yellow cards and the YB player would be sent off.

Quite funny seeing the reaction to this red compared to any other player I’ve seen get sent off for us in the CL.

Maeda gets a pass because he’s awesome, and was brilliant last night. Gutted we won’t see him against Villa and we’ll miss him on the first leg of the playoff game.
