I had far too much heartbreak with Samaras to fully support Maeda, it's exactly the same, world class one minute, pub footballer the next

Don't insult samaras. The Greek * is on a whole other level of class.

I'm no faulting the guy's effort he runs himself into the ground every game but so did Johnny Hayes ffs. Some people may be content to settle for players at the level of Maeda but I'd like us to aim higher.

Because its a random number to suit an argument. It’s also the most toothless argument when it comes to football, which I’ve explained already. Nobody wants to accept that so it has to be said again, there are more stats to look at and I’m not talking about xG pish. Simply looking at his goals and assists over 17 games isn’t an assessment of a footballer.

Here’s some comparisons. These are for the league. The CL numbers are similar on a smaller scale, far more effective than McGregor. O’Rileys defensive stats are far better in the CL than League, equal to Maeda.

In the League he’s had 73 ground duels, won 40. Even if he’s not winning them, he’s getting about and making players make decisions.

    O’Riley has 55, won 29.
    McGregor had 36, won 19.

He has DOUBLE Mcgregors defensive stats in less minutes. People don’t realise how absurd that is and that’s why Rodgers plays him.

Rodri is known for breaking up play in an equally dominant possession based side, he’s got 58 and won 30 in about a game less.

We need a midfielder in putting up Bissouma (97/61) or Casemiro (86/47) numbers before we think about phasing Maeda out the starting line up.

People need to stop saying we don’t need him when he’s the main reason we have the possession stats we have. Yes more goals and assists would be wonderful. But it would be interesting to see how much his pressing and defence leads to a goal. Almost as vital as assists.

Right now O’Riley is giving us goal and assist numbers of a winger. While Maeda gives us the defensive stats of a defensive mid. So swapping that makes no difference. Having O’Riley and an attacking winner would lead to the midfield being overrun more often each game and that’s when sloppy draws happen. Our midfield isn’t balanced at all but Maeda does help them.

Seen some people complaining about him not laying it of off wide for Kyogo or Forrest on the counter near the end of the game and really don't get it, the two defenders had their eye on the runners and weren't closing Maeda down, they left him wide open to shoot through the middle, fine he didn't score, but it was a solid shot on target and not an obvious wrong decision.

Some fans have been giving him stick recently, he's no Ronaldo but you can only ask for him to try his best.

It’s just so easy to watch a player and think he’s not contributing. Especially over a season, I barely remember what happened against Killie never mind the rest.

You look at actual numbers and its so plain to see how ridiculous he is.

As I said, get a midfielder in to do his job and we will talk about him being a super sub.

It's said a lot on here, but if he was a more technical player he'd be nowhere near Celtic.

In a perfect world, we'd have another winger to properly rotate with him, but with Abada out injured until February and Tilio still out, it leaves Palma and Yang, and Yang is definitely still a work in progress.

I like him, he's a frustrating player but I'd love to see how he plays up front, whether that's alongside Kyogo or by himself.

He was used upfront by us on a few occasions when he was initially brought in. He is good at running off the shoulder of the last man, but as we already know he was wasteful with opportunities. He just isnt the quality of finisher that we need for a striker at celtic.

Aye, he gives so much to the team for the whole game, he's not, quite rightly, getting left out..

Thought it was interesting that Rodgers kept him on the right when Forrest came on.

Looks like the plan may be to play him on the right going forward.

Wouldnt be the 1st time Rodgers has altered a players position and turned them into a better player

Daizen Maeda has withdrawn from the Japan squad due to injury.

The Celtic winger had been called up for the Samurai Blue this month but won't play for his country.

Maeda had been selected for fixtures against Canada and Tunisia during the international break but has now been removed from the squad due to injury.

The Japanese forward played in the win over Kilmarnock at the weekend and was only withdrawn in the 89th minute. The extent of his injury which has ruled him out of international duty is unclear.

However, the Japan FA has confirmed Maeda has withdrawn due to injury with Hayao Kawabe called up in his place.

Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi remain in the Japan squad for the international matches this month

Mmm, hope nothing serious big player for us..

You get the feeling he loves playing for his country so it must be substantial enough to keep him out.

We seem to have no luck just now with injuries, hopefully nothing to severe and is fine for the end of the break.

Looked good as a samurai, in honesty would tear up a Europa League or conference league team. Even with his pace, most CL teams have him sussed out

They do, but our playing style also doesn't use him as much as we should. And he also has any winger in the world sussed out, so...
