I think whoever sanctioned that caption knew exactly what he was doing. Sensationalism sells, good journalism comes second in red tops. Simple answer is twofold.

    A) Don't buy the Record

    B) Use the Celtic View as a tool to hit back at the owners who may exert some sort of pressure on the editing staff at the Record. If enough letters or e-mails are sent to the Celtic View protesting then they will have to do something about it. They do also own the Rangers News.

    And if anyone wants to e-mail or call the Trinity Group to complain...this is the man to speak to;

    celtic football club statement

    Newsroom Staff
FOLLOWING significant reaction from Celtic supporters around the world to a caption printed in a national newspaper, Celtic Football Club has reiterated its position on this issue.

“As the club stated at the recent AGM, this is a poisonous, repugnant, despicable and cowardly campaign. Jock Stein was a great of Scottish football and this campaign is absolutely disgraceful.

“The club did not want to dignify the issue with a detailed response and, having discussed this fully with the Stein family, they have been content to let us deal with it.

“However, it is necessary for Celtic Football Club to respond publicly and assure our supporters that this is something we take extremely seriously.

“Clearly, we abhor this poisonous campaign which is merely a sickening attempt to tarnish the name of one of the greatest figures in Scottish football history. Celtic Football Club will continue to tackle this issue whenever it arises.

“With regard to the newspaper involved, the club has discussed this issue with their senior management, who have assured us that they are regretful as to what has happened and that they will be taking action.”

I`m going to be honest. When I saw the caption I didn`t think much of it. It`s a picture of a quality banner with a caption underneath that`s a play on words of the terrible slur the huns use. I wasn`t offended and my opinion is that people are gettin a bit carried away.

There are many, many reasons to hate the Record and it`s hun loving staff. Same goes for just about every paper in the land. I`d recommend not buying ANY of them truth be told as they`re almost all full of pish about Celtic or hun propaganda.

This caption however, to me anyway, is not much of anything.

To be fair mate the sole purpose of the caption is to perpetuate this *. It probably seems like a bit of a laugh to the little * down at the daily record
but it's not very fair on the mans family and friends.

It's a play on words which serves to highlight and perpetuate the original slur. I'm surprised you're not offended by it.

I can see where you`re comin from saying that it perpetuates it. In that context I would say it was pretty irresponsible.

However it didn`t take the original quote and make it into something bad. On the contrary it took the disgusting original and turned it around on it`s head.

Many of the guys on this forum and other sites do the same thing. 'Big Jock Knew....how to win', Big Jock Knew........that the Rangers are *' etc.

I would not be surprised in the least to find out that someone has 'Big Jock`s Crew' as their signature or on a t-shirt somewhere and a Daily Record 'reporter' has read it and used it.

By all means feel offended if you think it`s upset you, I`m not goin to say anyone`s wrong for doing so, but I`m not going to get worked up about it.

I can see your argument. However, the caption appeared in the Daily Record, a paper with a history of clear Rangers bias. A paper which has printed lies about Celtic and their players in the past. Thugs and Thieves springs to mind.

I think you are being naive if you think the sub editor's motive was innocent and innocuous. That person knew what they were doing. It's a blatant slur on Jock Stein.

I know all about the Record`s bias. I hate the paper and if you look through my posts I`m sure (as well as having too much time on your hands) you`ll see plenty of them complain about the pish written by the tabloids. I agree 100% that the media in this country is heavily in favour of Rangers.

However I hardly think it`s a blatant slur on Jock Stein. What did they say he did? I know what the huns are implying, but 'Big Jock Crew' implies that the fans holding the banner are all behind Jock Stein. They showed a picture of a banner made and displayed by Celtic fans in honour of Jock Stein. They didn`t mock the banner, or mock the fans or Jock Stein.

Maybe the sub-editor wasn`t trying to be a shining knight trying to slay the hordes of huns besmirching Stein`s name, but if the guy had been going for a blatant slur on Jock Stein, he might`ve tried saying something derogitory about him.

Any reference, pun, play on words, call it what you will does nothing but perpetuate the slur. Whatever the writer's motives, and I still think they're questionable, it is completely irresponsible on the part of a national newspaper, I use the term newspaper loosely, to publish what they did. If it's not challenged it goes on and gets even more blatant next time.
