The angle about McGeady choosing Ireland because he thought it would be easier to get into their team than Scotland's is clearly wrong. Ireland were a pretty good team and better than Scotland then. The stuff about him not being good enough for Scotland is wrong and taking understandable bitterness too far. He is very good and would walk into the Scotland squad and his exceptional potential was clear several seasons ago. It is true that a flying Maloney (last season style) is still a slightly better player than Aidan in terms of end product but McGeady's potential is as good if not better and both are great players who would certainly be in the Scotland squad. The truth seems to be he was huffy about being overlooked or something by Scottish youth level teams and he then cynically (not for cultural reasons) chose what looked like a better bet for glory and getting to the finals etc at the time.

As a Scotland supporter I too am very very disappointed he made that choice. He made it far too young and did not realise how bad rejecting his own country would go down or what a pariah it would make him among even reasonable Scots. He would probably not make the same decision now. However, it cannot be reversed and its very odd and uncomfortable to hear Celtic supporters enjoying McGeadys discomfort. At least he is playing for a team most Celtic fans also have a soft spot for as a back up when Scotland are not playing. Its not like he chose England! Unless we borrow David Tennant's tardis (if the daleks, cybermen or teddy bears have not got him yet), his decision cannot be reversed now. We have to let it go and not be bitter. It can be done: In the last few months, I no longer need restrained and administered horse tranquillisers when Liam ' judas' Miller is mentioned. lol

That's a good summary of how it went. The school rule was a daft one on the SFA's part. However, most Scots would feel it was pretty bizarre not to just wait a year or so and play for Scotland and that practical/ personal career considerations (which is what it seems to have been) should never come into it where country is involved. Duncan Ferguson also perplexed Scotland fans because he did not play for Scotland because of reasons that most feel should not have interfered with his DUTY (which is an old fashioned but vital concept) to play for your national team. I understand McGeady's loyalty to the set-up that took him on but I am sure the vast majority in all countries feel that your duty to play for your country is a responsibility not to be outweighed by career or practical considerations or other loyalties. That said, he made his decision and it leads nowhere to get bitter about it no matter how disappointing it seems. On a purely practical note, the club problem of having two brilliant players (McGeady and Maloney) who both have the same best position has not been carried through to international level (he says clutching at straws for a positive angle). Anyway, come on Scotland and good luck Ireland!

This is only being dragged up because of the 2 countries contrasting results at the weekend.
The boy made his decision based on his background with Irish schoolboy football, and I'm sure he has no regrets.
I'm as disappointed as anyone that he's not playing for Scotland, but I respect his reasons and want to see him and Ireland succeed.
