The protection Boruc and Big Fras got from Lennys and Strachans tactics is night and day compared to the protection Brendans set up gives Gordon.
Two boys were both better keepers than gordon but the euro comparisons just arent fair.

Lenny’s team, aye, not so much Strachans though.

They get a very hard time but in the CL they were * brilliant, a few moments of madness aside.

Like Caldwell mistaking Ronaldinho for a teammate, or that performance against Benfica :56:

2012/13 we reached the last 16
2013/14 we were poor but still held Barca to one goal
    2014 to present Craig Gordon

Doesn’t detract from the point that Caldwell and McManus were excellent for us at the highest level.

2014 - Present - Ronny Deila and Rodgers, two managers at the opposite end of tactical approaches in comparison to the likes of Lennon and Strachan in Europe, different players, different periods, different group stage draws etc etc.

You could go on. Bit unfair.

They were limited players who managed to give that bit(very big bit) extra at home in Europe. The fact of the matter is if we are to beat Barca Juve, etc we need our players to play above themselves.

I had great faith in them at the time to do the business. I had McManus to score and a 2-1 scoreline the night we beat Milan. I remember it well the bookies ran out of money that night and I had to collect my winnings the next day in town.

Much did you get for that shout man?

What our players need in Europe is the players attitude to defensing that MON, Strachans and Lenny’s teams had. Look at Aberdeen against us last day, bodies on the line, throwing themselves infront of everything. Thats what those teams did in Europe, when we were being outplayed they found new depths to go to, to find that wee bit extra, the do or die attitude.

We aren’t good enough to just do it through pure football, we need that edge.

Never seen a player that defines that more than Stephen McManus.

Agree with that.........plus imo changing our style in Europe also but that's another story which not everyone agrees on....just sick and tired of taking these absolute doings!!

I’m not sure if it’s a manner of style, I think he’s tried to change the style a few times, it’s down to attitude for me.

i suppose now you mention it the manager did adjust in Paris, for example, however i do think we have been far too open on other occasions.

It was Paris in partivular I was thinking of, it’s something that worried me because BR used that as an example of him goimg defensive.

We had 5 at the back but was it * defensive.

For me Gordon’s a good goalie, nothing more than that. Certainly great business on a free transfer, and cheers Ally McCoist for getting him fit for us.

As has been said for the CL we need a truly great goalkeeper, pulling off unbelievable performances and striking fear into the opposition. Forster, Boruc, Bonner in their prime.

These GKs are * hard to come by and it seems that Rodgers has decided to just throw his support behind Gordon and Bain. Ideally we’d get someone real quality in but it’s not of vital importance I don’t think.
