I would like to think few to no people on this forum are genuinely racist against Jews. And I do think that's the case tbh. However, I think the majority of Pro-Palestinian supporters on here are both very bigoted and also very ignorant. I think most don't really know what they're on about.

This post is a perfect example (sorry to pick on you Paul).

Firstly, if you really think that the Israeli government or anyone in Israeli would treat Beram's family different in any way because he played for Palestine then you clearly have no idea about the people there or the way the country is run. As he himself says Arabs and Jews just interact normally with eachother. Israeli is actually a much less bigoted and divded place than Scotland, Northern Ireland or even Cyprus.

Also the fact that you still seem to think he's Palestinian despite the fact a direct quote from himself only a few posts above yours proves otherwise shows an alarming lack of research put into a highly inflammatory post.

TheRealFenian. Why have you described him as a self-proclaimed 'Arab Israeli'? And put the term Arab Israeli in quotation marks?

If you were a tabloid journalist I would suggest that you were trying to undermine the reality that he is one because you don't want it to be the case. Despite the fact he has himself said it.

Maybe Boycotting events involving Israeli sport would be a good thing.

But Boycotting a Celtic match because they have signed(if it happens) an Israeli player is pretty pointless and not the Answer.

Its not like its Rami Gershons fault all this is happening

Firstly it's debatable whether or not being a Jew is a race. It's a religion. There's a significant minority of Jewish people that are Pro-Palestinian. You can see them at the forefront of many a demonstration against Israelis treatment of the people of Palestine. I'm certainly not anti-Jewish, I'm anti-Zionist.

I put 'Arab Israeli' in quotation marks as I feel it is insulting to Arabs who live there that are being treated less than human. They are not equal citizens of 'Israel'.

It's no heart breaking news for me to hear Kayal define himself as an 'Arab Israeli'.

    Agreed.

But a stand has to be taken and if someone decides they can make this stand by doing X. Let them. Hopefully it will highlight plight and will encourage others to do so.

Ok. Well if you don't know the difference between someone who is Palestinian and someone who is Arab-Israeli then I don't see much point in us talking about this.

I see what you're saying but this is just wrong. It's clear you know about the situation in Israel. So do I. It would be fair to say that Israel as at least as divided as Cyprus, the six counties and Scotland (in that order, considering that not all three as as divided as one another).

Opinon polls in Israel regularly show extreme polarisation: anti-Arab opinions, predominantly among right-wing Israeli Jews, and relatively anti-Jewish opinions among a significant minority of Israeli Arabs, specifically Muslim Israeli Arabs. Druze are Zionist to a man (they serve in the Israeli Defence Forces) and Christian Israeli Arabs are more neutral. Left wing Israeli Jews are divided into hawkish and dovish camps but may be generally said to be less "bigoted" toward Arabs and Palestinians than right-wingers are.

Opinion polling repeatedly shows a strong anti-Arab caucus among the Israeli Jewish population - including those who favour "transfer" of the Palestinians from the occupied territories, fewer rights for Israeli Arabs, oaths of loyalty to the state, and so on.

Maccabi Haifa and indeed Haifa in general is well-renowned as a haven of Arab-Jewish co-operation - Maccabi Haifa is the most widely supported team among Israeli Arabs throughout Israel - but you will of course know full well that Beitar Jerusalem is famous for anti-Arab racism and hooliganism directed against Israeli Arabs, Palestinians and Israeli Jewish left-wingers, as are many other historically right-wing Israeli Jewish clubs.

I agree that Israel is not the hellhole it is often depicted as, but it is absolutely a polarised and divided society on a par with Cyprus and the six counties.

No, there isn't much point me arguing against Israel with someone who has the Israeli flag as an avatar.

This is BS. I have friends who ran the blockade in Gaza during the last war. I've seen al Quds blacked out by radicals on road signs, leaving only the Hebrew and English name of Jerusalem. I've met and taught Palestinian refugees who'd disagree. I've met with the more left-wing fringe of former IDF in the Sinai who are embarrassed about the situation. There was a Haaretz article recently about how a majority of Isralis would support assimilating the West Bank but denying its inhabitants voting rights. If you want to argue against Che for his actions then fine. But don't try to present this issue as something that it's not in a thread that is about a player.

Well there have been problems. His family's home was attacked before with epithets shouted and he has refused to sing the national anthem to the tune of harsh criticism from some quarters in Israel.

*edit* was this moved from the Gershon thread or am I just going insane?

I don't object to debating about it with people who have a differing point of view to me. However, I would expect the person I'm debating with to have a basic knowledge of the topic. For example, I'm about to respond to Doire Bhoy's post which I think is

And yes, I have an Israeli flag as my avatar. You don't know why I have it; or what my thoughts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are. So I don't really see what difference it makes.

I know there are many different viewpoints. But the point I was trying to get across is the average Israeli person isn't a raving bigot or right-wing/left-wing lunatic. There are some places where people get on better than others. And some where they don't.

From what I've heard about Cyprus from someone who lived there for a while it seems to be much worse than either Israeli or here but that's basing it on what that person said and some football-related things I've read. I don't know much about it.

But football is generally not the best way to judge these things. As you point out there are right-wing Israeli clubs - but we also have right-wing clubs here. I don't think they're a fair representation of society.

It sounds like the people you have spoken to aren't particulalry neutral. But the part about Kayal's home being attacked is very disturbing. Do you know where I could read a news article about it?

    1) I find it ironic when Brits complain about all the Pakistanis and Indians in the country. Same goes for the French and all the Algerians/Tunisians living in their country. Colonialism is a *. :smiley-laughing002:

    2) I am 100% against the death penalty in all circumstances.

I have more than a basic knowledge of the topic having visited the West Bank in 2005 to see an art show. It was more than eye opening and it came across as an extremely intimidating place to be if you were a Palestinian.

I completely agree with you that not every Israeli is a right wing ultra Zionist.

Not sure I'd say the Cyprus conflict is a worse than the Israeli conflict. The militarist extremes Israel go to are non-compariable to Cyprus nowadays.

I think you would be hard pushed to find anything said by me that fits the bold.

What I did say about the Island, was an attempt to make the thread more tongue and cheek. As well as to have a dig at our fatter brother, across the pond.

Here is an opinion of mine, or more an observation. It is not political nor all that thought provoking, but it is something I have noticed that is beginning to alarm me.

The Air Hostess (Male and Female) have become somewhat, well. *.

I fly a lot, and one thing I have noticed is the quality of service, across all classes is in steady decline. The staff are somewhat more aggressive, less well presented and in general far less efficient. I am not a needy passenger, in fact I rarely bother anyone but when I do I would expect the service we used to get rather than this new breed of failed junkie models that look like burned out caricatures of Lilly Allen. They cannot be bothered and quite frankly, are rude as *.

Air travel, is still expensive and is getting more expensive. For some people, it is a very rare occurrence and for others, it is a way of life. What they require is value for money and a service that comes with it.
