I have to agree with this, I do think he's overrated. For every brilliant corner or free kick there's 5, maybe even 6, absolute howlers. He's nowhere near consistent enough. Saying that I think he'd be great as a last resort back up on a lighter wage because he would be a great guy to have about the place, he love the club and does have good experience.

I think that is extremely unfair, not to mention factually inaccurate considering he is consistently in the top percentile for passing accuracy in our team, especially in Europe. It's not for sentimental reasons at all, he's been injured for the majority of our last two campaigns, where we have been poor.

We've missed players like him in there. One of the only people in our team that I side that I'd trust at that level. One of very few who knows how to handle himself there, even for Scotland last year he was the outstanding player in a very good performance against Germany, against some of the best players in the world like Kroos and Schweinsteiger.

To throw that away would be nothing but daftness. It's a different story if we don't keep him fit from now to the end of the season.

He knows Celtic, has a winning mentality, has good ability, a bit of steel about him and isn't on high wages. There's no downsides for us.

Fair enough. But obviously I disagree, and think my assessment of him was pretty fair.

Like many of the players currently at Celtic just now, I just don't think he's good enough.

Personally although the last 2 seasons have been injury blighted I hope a new contract can be agreed with Mulgrew. Given the high number of games we play in a season he brings a lot to the squad with his passing and set piece quality as well as his ability to play in several positions. Plus he gives us some vitally needed experience in what overall is a young squad. Time will tell what happens as I would expect that we will see quite a few players leaving Celtic this summer and Mulgrew could well be one of them but personally I hope he agrees a new contract and stays.

I could understand him wanting to leave for a championship team, just for the sake of it. Or is this out of the question?

" back up at best " - some of you are talking like we are a good side overflowing with good players ....we aren't.

I would love to see Charlie playing CB organising that defence and getting things sorted back there. He is a quality player and is always good to have on the pitch .

if the deal can be agreed, and he can remain fit and injury free, which might be a problem, i would give him another yr at a time to see. just do the 1 year deal after 30 yrs rule.

I think we should definitely keep him. As others have explained he has great experience and he's a very good player. I also think his personality is good for the squad. I just hope he can regain some form under Ronny.

One year rolling contract seems fair enough considering injuries but I'd be tempted to sign him till he's 32 then do one years.

Essential squad member.. He provides cover for three positions whilst on the bench, this in turn allows us to have more attacking players as options.

The harsh reality is that we have too many players in the squad. When it comes down to it would you rather give Mulgrew the new deal and play him ahead of guys coming through like Ajer, Henderson, Rogic, Christie, Allan. There's going to have to be some tough choices made in the summer.

The one thing going for Mulgrew is his versatility. I like Mulgrew but if it was a choice for instance between seeing Henderson play more or Mulgrew stay I'd rather have Henderson. The same could be said for Commons & Forrest, I'd rather see Rogic & Christie feature than keep these guys around. Not everyone will agree but that's the situation we are faced with.

Good post. We all know that Charlie isn't the player he was, maybe 5 years ago. He has gone through a number of injuries over the last 3 years. However what is unshakeable is that at the core he is a Celtic Man and I think we need him to help the young squad develop as people - same goes for Commons & Brown. However my doubt is whether at the age of 29/30, Charlie will be happy in becoming a bit-part player. He has many skills and it's mainly his injuries that have hindered him. Sadly, I think Charlie will be offered a reduction in wages and like Commons will be off.

    Totally agree..

If Ronny is gonna come through a really tough period in his career, then he should be allowed to at least have the chance to start showing us that long term vision of youngsters breaking through and that attacking, exciting football, with player's he's assembled as well ..

Some long term senior's will move on. No doubt about it..

As far as I'm concerned he's not good enough, in any 1 position, to be a first team starter. Yes, he's a back up player. Yes, he can play in a variety of positions, just not well. A lot of fans seem to think he's the same player that won the player of the year award. He's not, and I don't ever see him getting back to that. Time for him to go and give the younger guys a chance.

He can play LB, but is he better than Izzy or KT ?

He can play midfield, but is he better than Brown, Bitton, Rogic, Allan, Henderson, Christie, Armstrong, Johansen, Ajer ?

He can play CB, but is he better than Sviatchenko, Boyata, Ambrose, Simunovic ?

I would rather Mulgrew, Armstrong & Ambrose were off the wage bill. Would sell Bittttton if we were offered a decent amount and use the money for an experienced centre half and defensive midfielder.

I'd keep Mulgrew due to his wide variety of positions he can play. That and he at times can deliver a half decent ball into the box, which cannot be said for the majority of our side.

He's a decent option if we have injuries and i'd much rather see him at CB than Ambrose.

I'd keep Charlie as well, loads of others should be shown the door first and that includes Ambrose and Boyata for me

I think he has shown to better in defence than the likes of Ambrose and Boyata.

He's 29, experienced and a good utility player. We need people like that around the squad.

Ambrose should be away as well. Don't rate Boyata that highly either tbh, but he looks like Ronnys 2/3rd choice so don't think he'll be going anywhere. A utility player is all good if he's 1st or even 2nd choice in a few positions but think he's behind a few people now in each position, so just seems a waste of a wage.

If he's willing to take a wage cut in level with his current position, fair enough. Otherwise I think it would be better for both parties if he moved on to a club where he'll play every week. Not long left of his career at a decent level.
