Pretty much all his goals or assists are from set pieces, and he's been * at them for ages now. Wish he could go back to scoring free kicks but he appears to have completely forgotten how to do it.

Infact I would guess that all 8 of those assists are from corners?

From open play though he's just not fast enough. Broony has the drive, energy and strength to go up against the Xavis and Iniestas, Wanyama obvs was just brilliant, Ledley is good enough, but for me none of our other midfielders are good enough for CL duty. Hopefully in time Biton amd other youngsters will be though.

Most probably are from set peices but probably half our European goals over the years have been from set peices.

I dont think he's been * at them either, his delivery is still world class.

He has never been that good at scoring freekicks for me either, i've always maintained that Stokes is our best freekick taker at shooting.

Don't think you can say world class mate I mean far less than 50% of his deliveries result in goals, also he's playing at a * level except for 6 games a season. I think he is (was) the best direct FK taker in our squad but for some reason they've all gone *. Stokes hardly ever takes one and when he does it's normally miles over, Commons just blasts and never scores, and Charlie has cannoned it straight off the wall in i'm sure at least his last 30 free kicks.

As I said though in open play I just don't think he's good enough for the top level, his passing and pace mainly let him down.

If it wasn't for his set pieces he wouldn't be in the starting XI, ESPECIALLY in European games.

As said, he isn't quick enough when on the ball nor does he have the pace for that level.

I hate to say versatile because I sometimes feel like it is an attribute that makes up for a lack of quality or expertise in one position. However Charlie Mulgrews quality shines through in every position he plays.

That is a funny point you make about sticking him up front. With his aerial ability and left foot he wouldn't be a bad option :smiley-laughing002:

I definitely see the use for him in Europe, although it's easier when you have someone like Wanyama in midfield too.

It's good to have a player who could slot into quite a few positions. Left back, centre back, holding midfield, centre midfield and out wide in those big champions leagues were we'll be defending for most of the game.

Great signing and definitely one of my favourite Celtic players. I still like to think his best position is at CB because he is just so classy in there and reads the game brilliantly, while offering some balance due to being left-footed.

To be fair though, whilst I don't like him on the wing, he has performed brilliantly this season in central midfield and is definitely a decent left-back.

I think he's played well in the last couple of games since coming back from his injury. However I must admit, I'm not his biggest fan, and I wouldn't really want him to be anything much more than a squad player next season.

Couldn't agree more mate, a very limited footballer and the phrase 'Jack of All Trades, Master of none' springs to mind when I think about him. For those deluded enough into thinking he's a great midfielder and he should play there for years with us, well, I for one would be sick if that happened and hope Lenny gets some midfielders in pronto. A poor LB, A terrible LM, Never a midfielder in a million years, an OK CB but is still prone to major mistakes in that area. See Kilmarnock 3-3 game or St Mirren League Cup Semi.

Hope we get rid of him This Summer or failing that as you said he becomes more of a squad player which is what he was brought in for. A liability at CL level and is holding us back from progressing into a better team, he's not the only one guilty of this mind you.

with regards mulgrew decent, and can ping a ball and versatile but no way should he be given a shirt practically every game just so he's on the park

As much as I value Mulgrew for his workmanship, attitude and unique (and somewhat unusual) blend of qualities that make him such a versatile utility player and a genuine threat, I totally agree with that bit in bold. Too often it feels like Lennon just tries to crowbar him into the team any which way, simply for the sake of having him there. It's not just Mulgrew he does it with either. It's definitely one of his biggest weaknesses as a manager, imo.

The description I'd give of Charlie Mulgrew is that he's a really accomplished and professional player. With his ability to seamlessly play in various positions it shows that he has a fantastic understanding of the game and this means that he can be trusted to perform to a consistent standard in almost every game. For a player who was initially thought of as back up I think his goals return of twenty four, the goals he's assisted both domestically and in Europe and his ability to put in a defensive shift make him a fantastic asset to the team.

Mulgrew was one of the main reasons for our massive victories against Hearts and Motherwell last month. Can't believe that some people can't see his value.

I'd prefer to see him play Left Back again to put in quality delivery, However it looks like Izaguire won't be dropped anytime soon for coming back into good form.
Mulgrew just isn't good enough for me.

I don't know how anyone can come to the conclusion he isn't good enough, I think he would be appreciated more if his name was Mulgreinho.
