The board is being responsibly prudent. It may not be showing the ambition some fans are bleating on about, but it will ensure Celtic's future is safe, not just in the here and now, but for generations to come.

You just have to look around at the number of clubs that have suffered from mis-management. Livingston have gone close to the wall, Gretna disappeared altogether, 'that other team' is in meltdown, Leeds overspent, and have sunk like a stone ever since & the list goes on & on...

We may be on a different scale to these examples, but the lesson is obvious. Indeed, the 'credit crunch' recession further illustrates the point.

Don't spend what you don't have.

<roottag> CELTIC chairman John Reid branded rivals Rangers "boring Holy *" in an astonishing blast yesterday.

Dr Reid also took a dig at the Ibrox side's cash plight during a heated row with Hoops fans at the club's AGM. When Celtic Trust chief Jeanette Findlay accused Dr Reid of "patronising" her, he said: "If you want a boring crowd of Holy *, go to the other side of the city."

The bitter exchange was sparked after the trust opposed the re-appointment of former Defence Secretary Dr Reid, majority shareholder Dermot Desmond and fellow director Tom Allison.

But as he defended the Celtic board's financial policy, Airdrie MP Dr Reid took a dig at Rangers - who are £30million in debt and looking for new owners to buy out majority shareholder Sir David Murray.

Dr Reid said if Ms Findlay wanted profligacy, she should "go to the other side of the city". He said: "If you start getting into a position where you are running up debts that you cannot afford, spending money you don't have, it is the road not to success but to ruin.

"The people who decide whether we will sell players or buy players are the management and the board, who are accountable to the fans and shareholders. Not some anonymous director of a bank."

Last night Ms Findlay said: "I was insulted and patronised."

Rangers Supporters' Trust chief Steven Smith accused Dr Reid of "gloating" over the Ibrox club's situation.

He added: "John Reid's comments could be expected from a Celtic fanzine, rather than from the chairman of a football club and a former minister of the Crown." Rangers last night refused to comment.

She sounds like a fukin *!

I agree with Reid * getting into loads of debt and potentially ruining the furute of the club!

Who made her a spokesperson for fans anyway, I would hardly describe the exchange as "bitter" either.

    During the AGM Reid stated:

when talking about the financial struggles of other SPL clubs, hardly gloating.

He's right to say we won't go down the same road as rangers and it would be disastrous to have the banks making the decisions, not gloating just common sense.

Sensationalised claptrap as usual from the rags.

fair points here. i was at the agm and it was a cheap, populist shot by reid at rangers. lets all remember that they are: 1) the league champions 2) playing in the champs league and 3) still competing in every domestic competition. can we say the same? nope. so lets work our side of the street and let them work theirs. and macrae, ignore dempsey's posts - this individual is just a dermot desmond apologist, so much so in fact that i would not be at all surprised if he were in desmond's and/or celtic's employ.

Great post. Let us not embarress ourselves, let them squirm and give them no cause to divert the atention. Ried, being a politician, should be more savvy than that. I know Bampot cooncillors who wouldnt have made that comment.......well no sober!:icon_mrgreen:

Utter rubbish. We cannot spend large sums of money because we cannot AFFORD to spend large sums of money. At least not without careful consideration.

Simply put, we aren't going to spend what we can't make. This means are never again going to be at the mercy of a bank, like we were in 1994, like Rangers, to our delight, are now. Therefore, Celtic are safe from the effects of the recession and the financal mismanagement that has devastated other club.

Hence, we are the only club in Scotland spending millions in transfer fees and wages. Hence, Celtic remains in the hands of Celtic men with Celtic their priority.

Spending millions to bring European and domestic glory to Ibrox is the exact trap Rangers fell into and to suggest now, of all weeks, that we should do the exact same thing is irresponsible beyond all comprehension.

its all relative. We are not asking for a suicidal hun strategy, were talking investing in quality one or two a year, we need to improve the squad or peoploe will stop buying books and we will lose as much and deteriorate further. we need to improve the team and the income will rise, CL money season books, if we dont we jepordise both.
