After the historic scenes at Wembley for the Women’s European Championships final showed the vast appetite for women’s football in England, Celtic FC Women goalkeeper, Rachael Johnstone hopes to see that enthusiasm spill over the border into Scotland, as they look to capitalise on that enthusiasm ahead to this weekend’s league opener against Hibs.

Even at the tender age of just 18-years-old, Johnstone knows the significance of Sunday’s record-breaking attendance of 87,192 and called on Celtic fans to get behind the women’s game north of the border, stressing the importance big Celtic crowds had when it really mattered last year.

“It’s incredible - it’s a goosebumps moment to be honest. It was incredible to see the attention the women’s game is getting so it’ll be great for women’s football in the UK,” she began.

“Hopefully it does transfer into fans coming to see us. The fans are a big part of how we play and the more there are, the better we play.

“The cup finals are a good example, the number of Celtic fans there really pushed us to the end so it’s important as many people come and watch as possible.”

Celtic fans again have the opportunity to back the Ghirls week-in, week-out this year with the season ticket scheme, and the keeper explained the feeling of meeting fans after full-time and her desire to see more at the Excelsior this season.

She said: “After the game when there’s young girls asking for autographs, it’s a proud moment so the more we get the better so hopefully we get a good crowd this season.

“I think we’ve come at a good time and I’m really excited for the future and Women’s football is on the up.”




With her third season with the first team fast approaching, the Isle of Lewis stopper also admitted the Hoops’ double cup winning season last year has left them craving more, and is raring to go on the hunt for more success, starting with Hibs this weekend.

“Pre-season has been going really well. We went to Gran Canaria and had a good week there and everyone looked good from day one, and it didn’t look like we had had a break. Everyone is really excited for Sunday so it should be good.

“We’ve had a taste of it and we want it again, but we want every better. We want to go back-to-back in the cups and we know our goals, and we’re not going to stop until we get them,” Johnstone added.
