    They're always pushing the attendance up (saying its more than it actually is) for some reason. Can't think why?

    McGinn to Wolves?

    The return to Glasgow of the former Rangers manager had been expected to put bums on seats but even the Little General couldn’t provide a tonic for the troops .
    With the Old Firm contesting a Youth Cup final at Hampden and Barcelona entertaining Inter Milan live on terrestrial television, the decision to reschedule this meeting — volcanic ash having prevented it going ahead seven days earlier — was the latest in a series of poor decisions by the Celtic board.
    <!-- BEFORE ACI -->

    Ironically, the game had originally been announced as a bonus match for season-ticket holders, who had been deprived of a Scottish Cup tie at Parkhead this season.
    Admission was free to book holders and just £10 for adults but such is the disenchantment among the support that only around 2,000 diehards turned up, leaving the famous old stadium 96 per cent empty. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was among the paltry crowd, running the rule over Northern Ireland winger Niall McGinn.
    Inexplicably deployed as a right-back, he played a pivotal role in carving out the home side’s first opening in the 26th minute, combining with Paul Caddis to engineer an opening for Zheng Zhi, whose angled drive from 15 yards missed the target.
    Three minutes later Georgios Samaras, whose inclusion in this starting line-up only served to underline the Greek striker’s peripheral status at Parkhead, then created an even better chance for Morten Rasmussen with an inviting cross from the right flank.
    The Dane’s powerful header looked netbound but an impressive one-handed save from Joey Didulica pushed the ball to safety.
    Jeremain Lens had the ball in the net for the visitors in the 37th minute, only for his effort to be disallowed for a handball offence only the officials spotted.
    Sixty seconds later Celtic were in front. Didulica made another impressive save from a Josh Thompson header but when Alkmaar failed to clear their lines Samaras beat the goalkeeper with a rising left-foot drive from 15 yards.
    It was a lead they lost just three minutes later when the Dutch passed their way through Celtic’s defence. Simon Poulsen played a one-two with Brett Holman and then teed up Graziano Pelle, who lashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
    Celtic made three changes at half-time, emphasising further the futility of the exercise. McGinn would have impressed McCarthy, however, with a serpentine run which took him past three opponents: unfortunately, his shot came back off the inside of Didulica’s right-hand post.
    Samaras headed home a half-hit Paul McGowan shot in the 73rd minute but was clearly in an offside position. Alkmaar were awarded a controversial penalty two minutes later when Edson Braafheid appeared to handle the ball outside the box but Jonathas De Jesus converted with aplomb to give Advocaat the last word.
    Match details
    Celtic (4-4-2): Zaluska; McGinn, Thompson, O’Dea, Braafheid; Caddis, Zhi, Ki, Samaras; McGowan, Rasmussen.
    AZ Alkmaar (4-3-3): Didulica; Swerts, Moisander, Moreno, Poulsen; Wernbloom, Dembele, Ortiz; Lens, Pelle, Holman.
    Referee: W Collum.
