Newcastle United have lined up a glamorous pre-season trip to Celtic in July in what they hope will be a curtain-raiser for both clubs’ Champions League campaigns.
Newcastle are set to confirm the Celtic Park date imminently, along with the South Korean leg of their summer tour of Asia. They will take on Tottenham Hotspur and a representative side in Seoul in early August, following a game against Arsenal at Singapore’s National Stadium on 27 July.
But The i Paper understands there will be no repeat of the controversial post-season trip to Australia which earned Newcastle a six-figure fee last summer but prompted criticism from environmental groups and prompted mixed reactions in a dressing room where several of the players were heading for international tournaments.
Instead Newcastle are mixing a lucrative trip to two emerging markets with competitive games, including their first trip to Parkhead since 2004. The hope is that the Magpies will be warming up for another Champions League campaign, having moved back up to third in the Premier League after a win against 10-man Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Newcastle will once again end their pre-season programme with the now-traditional Sela Cup weekender, featuring back-to-back games against overseas opposition along with a game for the women’s side, who have consolidated in the Championship this season.

I've got family that support Newcastle, we all went to the last friendly maybe 20 years ago, so hopefully all get to this as well.
-
I remember going to see the new Celtic Park in a pre season friendly against Newcastle in 1995. Game was rubbish (1 1 I think) but the stadium looked incredible.
-
I'll be going to this. Best mate is a Newcastle fan and he's always wanted to experience Celtic Park. Win win.
-
Sure I read the 17th July a while back when this fixture first popped up?.

Any date yet?

You would never think we'd have 2 full coaches from Middlesbrough. Can't imagine anywhere else in England that would have 2 coaches from the same place for Celtic games..jake10 likes this. -

As a whole their support don’t really have a preference of us or them. I know a few of us that support them, and a few huns that do too. It’s not like Chelsea. There’s no more of them than there is in any other club down there.
Plus values wise a lot of the Geordies are more in line with us in Scotland, rather than British. But of course the ones that come up for the game will be the * ones. -

I remember the game for the North Stand opening, and Ginola getting booed. Then there was the rigged game where we gave them a penalty on purpose to let Shearer score the winner.
That was the first time that I couldn't say, Celtic don't play friendlies.
