Except that list of songs is quite clearly bullshit.

First of all, let's consider the source from which that came. Second of all, though, that match was a unique circumstance. It doesn't excuse it, but there was a reason that people at that Hearts match were deliberately choosing the most offensive songs and chants they could find. Its far from the way that a normal Celtic crowd would behave.

Wel i complained to the BBC in England - as a "neutral" watching Scottish football. I didn't hear anything - except the Irish national Anthem, and I told them so.

I also told then it was nice to see "our"queen laying a wreath to those who died during the rising and that it was an insult to her if they were tarnishing the songs of the old brigade with their sectarian brush.

I await their response with interest.

I would ask you, who made that list up? Why did the fans react in the manner they did? I know you've got a strong opinion on this matter but you can't just pick the facts that suit your argument :97:. Even the IRA songs aren't religous hate or racism, its a political point of view relating to a free Ireland. Although maybe too much for a football match not nearly as bad as the hatred spewed by the Rangers fans :47:.

You keep bringing this definition of a political divide to back up your argument that some of our songs are sectarian but you are wrong. It is well known and publicised that the sectarian problem in scotland is religion based and we do not sing songs about religious hate.

"In the political realm, to describe a group as "sectarian" (or as practicising "sectarianism"), is to accuse them of prioritizing differences and rivalries with politically close groups. An example might be a communist group who are accused of devoting an excessive amount of time and energy to denouncing other communist groups rather than their common foes"

I would argue that we are not practicising political sectarianism as the political point of the songs are Irish Republicanism and many Rangers fans are Unionists, totally opposing views.

100% agree, the definition can't be changed to suit an argument. Rangers sing sectarian songs rooted in hate, Celtic sing football and Irish folk songs which sometimes touch upon Irish republicanism and the struggle for freedom.

By those definitions, all football teams & their supporters that wear their colours are sectarian.

Some people get the * battered out of them for wearing a football top, and killed (thats were I live, in the midlands in England, teams lower than the Championship).

But Gunt fails to mention that. Is it only an "Old Firm" problem????

Has anyone had a reply from the Bigoted Broadcasting Corporation yet?

Will be interesting to see how they attempt to vindicate their smears…

I'm sick of the bbc trying to drag Celtics good name through the dirt, they should have been made to apologise quickly instead they are dragging their feet. 'Ooh ah up the Ra' isn't sectarian so why are they using it as an example of sectarianism.

I think Alex Salmond was clear today in parliament what he was meaning by bigotry & sectarianism. When he said:"Well, it will be stopped - I will not have people living in fear from some idiotic 17th Century rivalry in the 21st Century." He means the Rangers support and their religious hatred.

The bottom line on this subject is this.

There is only one team in Scotland that UEFA has deemed fit to charge on several occasions with sectarianism. The Scottish Government should be taking their lead from UEFA in this. Only this way will there be unilateral agreement on what should and shouldnt be sung at games.

To simply ban "offensive" songs without legal basis is naive. Football fans are the most inventive people in the world and will simply open another songbook. There has to be a clear and consistent interpretation. Thats why Salmond et al should speak to UEFA and work together.

I wonder about people who when annoyed the first thing that springs to mind is to drag up a load of our more dodgy songs. It means that stuff is just below the surface. It also indicates that they see republican stuff as * for tat for loyalist behaviour.

Don't know how much truth there is in this but a guy in my work(well fan) said he could quite clearly hear people chanting "Stand up if you love the RA"

Now I've never heard that been chanted ever at any game I've been too but he was very angry and adamant that this was chanted, amongst others..

Didn't come across on television anyway. I definitely heard BOTOB and Soldier's Song, but obviously, neither of these are sectarian. I'd be very surprised if your Well friend could hear what was being chanted from the Celtic end, especially if it was only a few idiots, but you never know.

There was no sectarian signing at The Cup Final. Not sure we have any sectarian songs either.

We have some IRA songs which I believe should not be sung at football matches but it's hard to think of any that are truly anti-protestant.

I hope we've got plenty of opportunity to sing 'Cheer up Ally McCoist' but refrain from belting it out, difficult I know.:shamrock:
