I don't mind the poppy either. I associate that with all the young men tragically killed in places like Flanders. :54:

No, I mean stuff like parades in full dress uniform to an extent (I get that this might have a different meaning to ex-servicemen and women than it does to me) and most especially Union Jacks, members of the royal family and politicians, etc.

This is the exact type of tacky performative nonsense I was mentioning. It really wouldn't shock me if there was a picture somewhere of a poppy the size of someone's house.

Everyone has a right to their opinion and this comes up every year. Whilst I will never boo it, I understand those who would not stay silent during it.

A better point I think that could be made is if you don’t want to observe it then don’t take your seat until it’s over. It’s a topic that will never be solved as long as the media and corporations push the poppy agenda for all wars (legal & illegal).

We should commemorate the Celtic players that served and lost their lives during the World Wars as well as any loved ones. We don’t need to do that on poppy day though.

I think he was just turning around what another poster said. A previous poster had said that people booing were booing the possibility of a ceasefire in Plaestine or something along those lines (you can find the exact words in the post above) and he was just turning that round to show the flaw in that way of thinking.

The British empire did that because it was an empire not because it was British. It's better to hate imperialism not nationalities, mate.

I was brought up in Glasgow, went to a non-denomination school, and for me the 11th November was always about the first and second World wars, and nothing else. The date/time and poppy imagery are to do with WW1. It wasn't only British soldiers who were involved in those conflicts, and many countries have ceremonies at this time, including France where I live.

Which proves nothing, except that it means different things to different people.

When did it begin to be called that? It's Armistace Day, relating to the end of WW1.....

BTW, I understand the various connotations etc from both "sides" and why many Celtic supporters are adverse to it. Freedom of Speech means freedom to disagree and protest if necessary. It's what they fought for in WW1 & 2

And this is exactly the kind of oversimplification I was talking about.

I just don't know or understand where we go from here, it's fukin depressing that people should be asked to stand silently and also those who boo during .
I stayed silent as my grandparents fought in both wars.
Maybe the club should state the silence is for both legal wars but I don't think it's gonna work either way.
    It gets worse every year.

You’re kind of right. But this is an oversimplification in itself. With more than a hint of whataboutery.

Yeah, you can say that there was an element of hypocrisy given the extent of the British Empire at the time. And that would be true. But if you’re talking about WW2, with a totalitarian power sweeping across Europe and beyond, then for many “freedom” did form a significant part of it. Freedom of choice, freedom of expression. Freedom from oppression and genocide for some. There are numerous other factors - geopolitical, social, economical, but it would be silly to claim that it wasn’t a significant factor.

WW1 was a * senseless mess. Doesn’t mean that it’s wrong to pay respect to those who died though. Most had no choice.

At the end of the day, the day has been made political and that means ordinary people have a right to give their political opinion by booing.

If they want it to be an apolitical act of remembrance for the sacrifice of these young people, then remove the Union Jacks, the members of the royal family and the politicians.

Whilst, I've no issue with anyone responding how they see fit..

I do find the booing a little crass..

In my personal opinion, turning your back on the silence would be far more potent and meaningful..

If you had full sections doing that it would be a classier response..

I remember Juve doing it at Anfield during a Hillsborough silence and thought it really hit home for obvious reasons..
