That’s not solely what the hate is for. Display today was admittedly cool, but if they never came back to Celtic Park I couldn’t care less. Place is better without them.

Celtic was founded so that Irish Catholics in the West of Scotland had a team to play for and to support - and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.If it upsets the Herrenvolk then so * be it.

RITG is a quality GIRUY tune and I say that as an atheist.

From my point of view it’s because they are a wee bunch of cowards who start * for no reason and then run away, but they are disliked for a number of reasons.

RITG is sectarian nonsense and doesn't belong at Celtic Park.

I think, like the majority of religious people, they’re born into their religion.

i have no problem with people having faith if it gives them a sense of hope and comfort in dark times. When they’re bringing it to football matches and spouting pish, sectarian songs like that in my clubs name? I draw the line

One of the main reasons was actually to deter poor Irish immigrants that were receiving poverty relief from Protestant founded groups in Glasgow from converting from Catholicism to Protestantism. Celtic was a vessel to essentially create a self-funding Catholic institution for the immigrant poor (as well as the poor of other faiths or indeed no faith) in order to keep both alleviate poverty and hunger, while keeping people within the faith.

While Celtic is a club open to all, so are Catholic churches. Protestants, Muslims Jews, atheists, etc. are encouraged to visit Catholic churches. Being a Catholic club isn't exclusionary in the slightest; There's nothing wrong with being a Catholic club.

I was watching a documentary on Dortmund the other night. I was surprised to hear that they were "like Manchester United... founded by the Catholic proletariat".

I suppose you could say the same of our origins: we were founded by the Irish Catholic proletariat in Scotland, who of course, are also an immigrant/refugee population. It's clear that Celtic's identity historically and contemporaneously is Irish Catholic. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A proud representative of a downtrodden people doesn't mean the club is exclusionary -- Celtic has always been egalitarian and social justice orientated. In many ways the Irish/Celtic struggle lends itself very organically to solidarity with other people in struggle irrespective of their ethnicity, religion, nationality or sexual orrientation. That's a hugely positive aspect of the club's Irish Catholic origins that should be celebrated and promoted.

Where does RITG fit in this context? I'm not sure. I feel it's more a defiant "* you" to those who would seek to marginalise and discriminate against the Irish Catholic immigrant population than some kind of sectarian battle cry like the Billy Boys. But perhaps because of its overt religious connotations it can be misinterpreted and I'd imagine that's where it becomes seen as being problematic.

for generations of immigrants it gave a rallying point where like minded people could come together, the religious aspect of it, like all religion is superstitious mince but I was certainly glad of it brought up in a west of Scotland town with three orange lodges
