Article from Paul Larkin from the HomeBhoys podcast

On Sunday I went on a wee bit of a mission. I knew the crowd would be low and so I decided for a first hand look at The Green Brigade and what they go through match to match. I thought Sunday would be a good opportunity as it wasn’t really a high intensity match (Thank *) and that surely no one would be getting too carried away.

I’d been intrigued to find out that Celtic SLO John Paul Taylor was now sitting close to The Green Brigade because of the increasing amount of match to match problems that have been occuring in section 111 and not from The Green Brigade I might add.

The first thing that hits you is noise. If you sit almost anywhere else in the ground you won’t be aware of just how noisy The Green Brigade are. The constant beat of the drum creates a Mardi Gras type vibe that you can’t help but get into.

Then there are the songs. Listening to them, I was taken back to the middle of The Jungle. They never stop for 90 minutes and you can’t help singing along to them. Remember when you did that?

As this was going on it was clear there was an increase in stewards around the group but it didn’t feel heavy or antagonising. As we moved towards half time however the police appeared. Two cops stood around 10 feet from me and glared at The Green Brigade. At this point John Paul dived into action. He asked the police what they were doing there and the police replied “upholding the law”. There then took place a convivial conversation with a clear difference of views that led to the two cops leaving again. During the conversation The Green Brigade belted out “Twas a morning in July, I was walking through Tipperary….”

    I loved that.

I had a mad night the night before so by the time I got to the game, I hadn’t eaten that day. I tiptoed down the stairs for a pie and saw three cops haranguing a young guy, no more than 13, about where his ticket was for. Is it boredom that drives them to this? Or just an agenda?

For the rest of the game, The Green Brigade sang and had fun. I did too. I was there for the whole game and failed to see any provocation The Green Brigade gave anyone. In fact, had it not been for them, Celtic Park would have been like a morgue.

Next season a standing section comes into play. 3000 safe standing places will replace 3000 seats and will hopefully increase the atmosphere too.

That’s all I saw The Green Brigade do, increase the atmosphere. These are not thugs or hooligans, they are Celtic supporters who love Celtic and show their support vocally.

    No matter who is watching.

Great read. Thanks for posting that. I am really hoping the standing section is such a big success next season that it ends up getting expanded.

If you want to merge the safe standing for GB thread with this it's alright.

Thanks for the posts Crow :50:

Definitely is harrassment when it comes to the Green Brigade I'm sure of it and the police are aided with the OBA. It was brought to light when Jeanette Findlay and Paul Quiglay brought the case to repeal it to the Scottish Parliament. The whole 'Shock and awe' practise.

It surely won't last after it's reviewed.

Looking forward to GB and the safe standing. Atmosphere should be even better.

Massive vote of confidence from the club giving the GB front and centre in the stand.

Can't wait to see how the atmosphere evolves next season.
