Update: Scotland are through to the semis against England (only their u18 side, since u20 is still in Korea) after Brazil and Czech Republic drew 0-0. Other semi is Ivory Coast vs. the Czechs. Best ever result for Scotland in Toulon is guaranteed, as they have never qualified out of the groups before. This is their 8th participation. Two more games for the kids, as there is a 3rd/4th place game as well. Glad to see the team get rewarded after beating Brazil.

CELTIC’S Scottish contingent, particularly Leigh Griffiths, lurched from ecstasy to despair in a dramatic finale to Saturday’s ‘Auld Enemy’ clash at Hampden.

Trailing to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s second-half strike, Gordon Strachan’s side were struggling for inspiration as the World Cup qualifier entered its closing stages. Step forward Griffiths.

In the 87th minute, the Hoops hit-man levelled the match with a fabulous free-kick and, sensationally, he found the net again three minutes later with another stunning set-piece, sparking frenzied celebrations among the home support.

But in a cruel twist, Harry Kane restored parity with only seconds remaining to deny Scotland a famous victory and leave the vast majority of Hampden and the country heartbroken.

Along with Griffiths, who became the first Scottish player to score twice against England since Jimmy Johnstone 51 years ago, four other Celts played the full match at the National Stadium - Craig Gordon started between the sticks, Kieran Tierney lined up on the left-hand side of a back-three and Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong were deployed in midfield. James Forrest was an unused substitute.

The national team’s hopes of qualifying for the finals in Russia now hang by a thread, with Scotland occupying fourth place in Group F and only four matches left to play.

Elsewhere, Mikael Lustig helped Sweden to a 2-1 friendly win over France in Stockholm thanks to Ola Toivonen’s late winner. The full-back played the full 90 minutes of the match and he could feature again on Tuesday night in a Nordic derby against Norway.

Emilio Izaguirre also played the entire game for Honduras as they went down to a 3-0 away defeat in the Aztec Stadium, striking a blow to their World Cup aspirations. A victory over Panama on Tuesday will be vital to reigniting their hopes of reaching Russia.

Fellow defender Dedryck Boyata wasn’t involved for Belgium in their 2-0 win over Estonia or the Red Devils’ 2-1 triumph against the Czech Republic.

Having come on as a second-half substitute for France Under-21s against Albania seven days ago, Moussa Dembele continued his comeback from a hamstring with injury by playing the final 20 minutes of France U21s’ 3-1 win over Cameroon last Thursday.

And fresh from scoring a wonderful winner for Australia against Saudi Arabia last week, Tom Rogic will be looking to turn on the style again on Tuesday when the Socceroos face Brazil in Melbourne.

Finally, Kristoffer Ajer is in the Norway U21 squad for their UEFA European Championship qualifier against Kosovo tonight in Drammen.

Ajer has scored on his u21 debut for Norway, against Kosovo. Header from a corner in the 23rd minute. He, along with the famed Martin Odegaard, are supposedly head and shoulders above the rest of the team, with a few commentators stating that the Norwegian centre back drought is over. Hope Brendan gets a good report!

CELTIC youngsters Calvin Miller, Anthony Ralston and Mikey Johnston have been included in Scot Gemmill’s Scotland Under-21 squad for the European Under-21 Championship qualifier against The Netherlands.

Miller and Ralston have made further inroads into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans this season after featuring last term with Miller earning the Man of the Match award in Saturday’s 2-0 SPFL win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and Ralston making his European bow last night as Celtic qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stages with an 8-4 aggregate win over FC Astana.

Johnston also made a memorable debut last term and although injury hampered his pre-season progress, he returned to action last night as Celtic’s Development squad kicked-off their league campaign with a 4-0 win away at Falkirk.

Scotland Under-21s take on The Netherlands in Paisley on Tuesday, September 5 and the game has a 7.30 kick-of time.

The trio of youngsters takes number of Celts on Scotland duty at the top two levels next week to NINE as no fewer than six Celts - Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong, Scott Brown, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths are also in Gordon Strachan’s senior squad for the World Cup qualifier double-header against Lithuania and Malta.

The national side travel to Lithuania for the first game which takes place on Friday, September 1, while Malta will visit Hampden on Monday September 4.
