Are you saying the team has to have an Irish connection for an Irish football fan to support the team?

Calling the orange order a religious organisation would be a bit of a stretch.

Liverpool have no links to Ireland.

Does that mean an Irish person can't support them. Give me a few reason why they shouldn't. Celtic might be an Irish club but they play in Britain just like Liverpool or any epl team. They don't represent Ireland in Europe like our own clubs do.

People might ask Celtic fans in Ireland a similar question like Why do you support Celtic when your not from Glasgow. Yes theres the huge Irish connection but when we draw an English team in Europe its known as "The battle of Britain". You wouldn't hear that if an LOI team were drawn against an epl team.

Well obviously not. Ireland isn't in Britain.

Celtic have more of an Irish identity than most of the teams in the free state anyway.

The only reason people in Ireland support English teams is because they're glory hunters. This is why Accrington Stanley and AFC Bournemouth don't have a following over here.

There never was a famine in Ireland . Each and every year of the potato crop failure Ireland produced more food than needed but the English Landlords shipped the food over to England thus starving the Irish .

I never denied anybody the right to support these teams. People can support the England national team or any of their league teams if that is what they choose to do. I was responding to your implication that Liverpool have historical links to Ireland. Liverpool are 100% English

Scouce not English they claim :smiley-laughing002:

Edit: I dont mind Irish lads supporting English teams, everyone in my Gaelic team supports a English club, it keeps the craic going if nothing else.

Did Liverpool allow Ian Paisley to address the Kop to plead for money to defend ulster from their enemies .
Or do we think a few Irish players make up for that . Souness chased all the Irish players away from Liverpool .

My biggest gripe about the Rebel songs is when they are sung by people who have no conscience memory of the troubles or when people in the Green Brigade defended that German lad recently against his conviction for singing ROH.

Also, they simply serve no purpose now. The World, Ireland AND Celtic have moved on.

    Because it's bollocks.

Liverpool WERE the Protestant team and Everton WERE the Catholic team but most people in England couldn't give a * about Unionism. They only started to pay attention to the IRA en-masse when they started targeting civilians but this hardly ever evolved into out right support for Unionists.

One of the most popular things heard in Britain during The Troubles was a desire to take ALL of Ireland out to the middle of the Atlantic and sink it. All this bollocks about English people en-masse supporting Unionists is crap. They hated the IRA en-masse but that was all.

It surely is bollix, because i would have thought i would have heard about this before.

Well naturally the IRA where hardly going to be the most popular movement in England. But * me allowing a complete bigot into a stadium to drum up support for a cause sounds a bit to far fetched to be true.

The older I get the less I care about Irish politics and that part of supporting Celtic. A few years ago I cared a lot, and even read a book or two about it, but it's really become an irrelevance to me. Don't get me wrong, I still would like to see Ireland re-unified and class myself as a passive supporter of the cause but I just can't be bothered to get all angry about it anymore. My own country has it's own problems and it's own 'fight' for freedom going on at the moment and that is much more deserving of my time and interest.

I think being on here for so long has helped to bring about the feeling of apathy. Whenever threads on this topic come up it's always the same arguments about politics, rebel songs, what songs should be allowed and what songs shouldn't be allowed at matches etc etc etc. It's all been done so many times before that it just bores me to death now.
