Roberto Martinez benefited from an Everton side that had a great defence, thanks to years of being organized by David Moyes. Howard / Baines / Jagielka / Distin / Coleman. He also inherited one of the fittest teams in the Premier League.

At the end of his first season, Distin and Howard showed signs of aging. And when it came down to replacing them and organizing things his own way. He was found wanting.

The year before Martinez took charge of Everton. They finished 6th, above Liverpool, and conceded 40 goals.
In his first season, they finished 5th (above Man Utd and Spurs), and conceded 39 goals (using the same defence as year before).

When it came to organizing his own defence, they finished 11th with 50 goals conceded. (finishing outside the top 8 for the first time in 10 years)
And the season which was his last, they finished 11th and conceded 55 goals.

Not only did he get criticised for his defensive management, but the squad was clearly unfit, Martinez even boasted that he didn't spend a lot of time on fitness. Everton went from a team that could keep a lead, to a team that would concede goals late on.

One of the first comments Ronald Koeman made when taking charge of Everton was how surprised he was at the lack of fitness.

One thing is for sure is that Everton deteriorated in his time there.

As for Wigan, the season before Roberto Martinez took charge, the finished 11th in the EPL.
    2008-09 - Won: 12, Drawn: 9, Lost: 17, Scored: 34, Conceded: 45, Points: 45 (-11 GD)

    And Martinez's first season .....

    2009-10 - Won: 9, Drawn: 9, Lost: 20, Scored: 37, Conceded: 79, Points: 36 (-42 GD) 17th

Wigan went from conceding 45 goals, to 79. They went on to ship 60+ goals in the next two seasons, and then finally 73 in the one they got relegated.

In the two Premier League jobs he had, both clubs deteriorated. How he got the Belgium job is beyond me.

I would call his earlier time here a learning curve. You can’t expect a rookie manager to come in and instantly reach his peak.

Maybe. Maybe your answer is right.

Or maybe people just think he’s quite good.

He also had the best win percentage of any manager at Everton since 1990.

If you thought he was backed enough why did you reply :giggle1:?

My post was about the people who were moaning about him not getting enough backing, citing a lack of ambition from the board, but are now telling us Lennon is the best manager we can get.

Worst home record in Everton’s history, he won 21 his first season then 22 over the course of the next two seasons. His win ratio is 31.2% with 80 wins 74 draws and 102 defeats. That’s his full club record down there.

Maybe not, but it’s certainly the peak of his managerial career to date. His last job (before us obviously) was at Hibs where he left them in 8th. Since then a new manager has come in and drastically improved them.

Haven’t seen anything to suggest he’s improved as a manager in the last few years.

Yeh the bad performances were always there. But there was also good ones, great ones and unprecedented success.

I probably will renew. It’s just a lot of money to give the club who seem to take the * out of us at times.

This. In the end it all seems to come down to ‘we beat Barca’.

Nobody seems to mention the season after which was a * embarrassment get pumped off that Milan team at home and Ajax away is one of the most brutal performances I’ve seen from a Celtic team in Europe. One tactic the whole night was to punt the ball to Samaras, barely completed a pass all night.

Weirdly it seems to be getting used as a criticism against him, like you get 10 points in the CL group stage for beating them or something :39:

You quoted me when bringing up the £60m figure.

Genuinely, can you find me one post in here who’s used us beating Barca as a criticism? Or it even being hinted as a criticism towards him?

I meant when you referred to his earlier losses in Europe with us. He steadily improved our team for 3 years and then the board decided it was time for him to start again and ripped the heart out of the team.

Yours, right there. Who keep saying it like it’s the only thing he has done at Celtic.

It’s not being used as a criticism. It’s just the point most people seem to come back to. Not just solely that game, but that group stage. Aye it was a great achievement, but people like to forget the other 3 European campaigns.

Because that was the point. If you thought he was backed enough why did you reply in the first place?

The only time it’s even been mentioned over the past few pages is when people not wanting him bring it up :giggle1:

Genuinely though, it’s stuff like that that causes the whole thing to break down into a bit of a shitfest. No complains from me if anyone thinks we can do better - we may well be able to - but when people trash his first spell here? Nah. It’s just way off the mark imo.

I don’t think so mate, from rebuilding after Mowbray to that was steadily better and better and it’s one of the most tremendous jobs I’ve ever seen at Celtic. Think people tend to forget just how massive a task he had and just how * magnificently he done before the board ripped out the spine of his team.

The only argument I’d have against getting Lenny in, is the board might try and get away with that attitude again, which is the last thing any of us want.
