ON an incredibly emotional and uplifting evening in Glasgow, the Celtic family celebrated the stunning achievements of the Lisbon Lions, 50 years to the day that they lifted the European Cup.

Around 13,000 Hoops supporters packed into the SSE Hydro to watch the world of football, music and entertainment pay tribute to Jock Stein’s side, who famously blew away Inter Milan at the Estadio Nacional to become the first British team to win the most prestigious prize in club football.

It was an extraordinary and unforgettable event, which showed why Celtic is such a unique club and its fans are so special. There were tears, laughter, cheers and non-stop singing as the Lions’ inspirational story of success was told through speech and song.

Part of the fairytale was that all 11 players were born within 30 miles of Glasgow, a remarkable feat that is never likely to be emulated. They provided hope and belief to so many, and that was reflected on the choice of music of the evening.

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers performed Don’t Stop Believing, Susan Boyle sang I Dreamed a Dream, and the People’s Tenor, John Innes, treated the crowd to a rendition of You Raise Me Up.

The Bay City Rollers, Michelle McManus, Johnny Mac and the Faithful, Eddie Reader, The Sisterhood also performed before musical superstar Rod Stewart took the stage. The huge Celtic fan described participating in the event as one of the biggest occasions of his life and he had the Hydro rocking to a selection of his smash-hits, including Maggie May, Baby Jane, You Wear it Well and You're in My Heart.

Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the greatest managers of all time, told the audience that it was a privilege to take part in the celebration. He paid a personal tribute to Jock Stein and the Lions and also highlighted the invaluable contribution of assistant manager Sean Fallon.

Former Celtic managers and greats Kenny Dalglish, Martin O’Neill, Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon received a rapturous reception as they described the legacy the Lions and the magnitude of their achievements.

And, unsurprisingly, the acclaim continued as current Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers took to the stage to offer his accolades about Jock Stein’s team, the Irishman adding that it was fitting his side were replicating the aggressive, attacking style of football of the Lions on this landmark anniversary, which has taken them one victory away from completing a domestic treble.

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler and Celtic legend Henrik Lasson also spoke movingly about the stars of ’67 via video messages on the big screens.

The stars of the show, however, were the Lisbon Lions themselves. And the roof almost came off the venue as they took to the stage along with their famous piece of silverware at the start of the extravaganza.

On and off the pitch, the Lions were a close-knit bunch, a band of brothers. And there was a poignant moment as images of those members of the squad who have passed away – Ronnie Simpson, Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone, Tommy Gemmell, Willie O’Neill and Joe McBride – were displayed on the screens.

Jock Stein, his number two Sean Fallon and his backroom staff of Neil Mochan, Bob Rooney and Jimmy Steele were also remembered.

And there was a sombre moment as Hoops supporter Elaine C Smith, MC for the night, led a minute’s applause in solidarity for those affected by the recent atrocity in Manchester.

The mood of the night, however, was overwhelmingly one of celebration and pride. And there was only way to end such a spectacular occasion as the Lions, along with all the musicians, performers and football greats, gathered on stage for a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone

The story of the Lisbon Lions will live on forever.

one thing i take away from tonight is how much of a football man sir alex is, the way he spoke of stein and the likes and just football in general was special, he learned everything he knows from celtic and the lions and growing up he was the manager who won everything, really thought he was superb.

Thank you so much for this mate.

From Kenny's early stories, to Gordon's wit, to Martin's passion, and to Neil Francis Lennon being reminded that he will never walk alone. That was beautiful.

Can't wait for the rest of the week.

He will take over from Brendan for the push to 15 in a row. He will be in his prime by then.
