    A good way - if you really need to go to sleep, and can be bothered putting in the effort - is to go to a cold part of the house for a while. Easy in winter - in summer you either need a cool shower, or open your freezer and put your head and arms beside it.

    When you then go to bed, the contrast between the warmth and the previous coldness diverts blood away from your brain, and you become sleepy.

    I think the hot milk idea is doing a similar thing - might be effective to combine the two.
