One thing Callum cannot be accused of by ANYONE is hiding.

    He's more than fine domestically.

But in European football our midfield needs more physicality. I have said it from day 1 as well, McGregor isn't a number 6, he's much more effective as an 8.

Thought he was pretty decent in all honesty. Wasn't the problem for me today.

After bruising and chastening defeats like Borussia Dortmund, the task of defending the indefensible falls, time and again, to Celtic’s captain

Callum McGregor is tired of facing the music. Tired of promising to learn valuable lessons and be better next time.

So far as the skipper is concerned, it’s not enough to talk the talk. At some point, a Celtic team with any aspirations of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League needs to stand on its own two feet.

If they carry on losing six and seven goals at this level, words become nothing more than white noise.

‘Everyone talks and talks and talks and everybody loves it,’ said McGregor. ‘But, ultimately, the game is played on the grass and we can only get away with so much talking. You have to back it up at some point.

‘We started the competition really well and then took a sore one in Germany. But, probably, the reaction to that game was based on how good we had been doing.

Everybody went there with full expectation that we were going to do well in the game and could maybe get something from it. But it shows there is still a big gap in terms of where we are trying to get to.

We can’t forget about how well we had done and that we are a good side. But we need to go and show that belief and show that quality and actually do our talking on the pitch.

‘That’s my hope for the rest of the campaign, that when we take to the pitch — and we come off again — everybody can say: “That’s a good Celtic team” and we’ve picked up points.’

After conceding seven goals in Dortmund, Celtic lost another two at home to Aberdeen on Saturday. Images of Cameron Carter-Vickers training at Lennoxtown offered the teasing prospect of the club’s most influential defender making his first appearance since sustaining a toe injury in the 5-1 hammering of Slovan Bratislava.

The absence of the American international from another Champions League game now has supporters fearing the worst.

The aggressive intensity of Atalanta has the potential to inflict further damage on a team missing the first-choice central defender and first-choice left-back Greg Taylor

Italy international Mateo Retegui has scored eight goals in eight games since moving to Bergamo in the summer.

Don't understand why we play Callum at dm in champions league for me it's not ever worked, his instincts aren't defensive and he lacks the physical strength.

Id like to see Bernardo or even mccowan tried there

Don't think McCowan is the answer there he's more of an attacker. Could see Bernardo though.

As Celtic prepare for tonight’s crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Atalanta, Callum McGregor took a moment to accept a special award from the Italian Celts CSC at the team hotel in Bergamo.

The Celtic captain was presented with the Player of the Season award for his outstanding performances last term, a recognition voted for by the Italian Celtic Supporters’ Club, who passionately follow the club from afar.

Reflecting on the honour, McGregor said: “It’s a massive honour as well. You get a little reminder of what it means to people and how far the reach that Celtic’s got.

'People are watching the games intently and supporting you with everything they’ve got alongside friends and family.'

“It shows you how important what we’re doing is, and how important it is to give our best and always shine Celtic in the best possible light.

“So, I’m obviously grateful to the guys for the award. I just continually try and do my best every time I take to the pitch for Celtic and I try to give back everything that I’ve got.”

For Roberto Longobardi, who represents the Italian Celts CSC, the opportunity to present the award to McGregor was a proud moment.

He said: “It is a pleasure and an honour to give this gift to Callum McGregor because our CSC nominated him as the best player of last season. Callum is a real Celtic man for us.”

The presentation took place during a particularly special time for the Italian Celts, who rarely have the chance to see Celtic play live due to the distance.

The group relished the opportunity to meet other Celtic supporters in Italy for such an important match.

Roberto added: “It is a special day. It’s not simple for us to travel to Scotland every week to see Celtic.

“When it’s possible to see Celtic in Italy, it is a very special day. We are meeting other Celtic supporters, and it’s a great day for us.”

Class tonight. I honestly think he’s underperformed quite a lot in Europe and can look nervous against the top sides but that was a proper captains performance. First half when lads were panicking and sloppy he was taking it in not panicking and getting us up the pitch. Read and cleaned up a lot of the danger too

Plugged gaps in the defence, burst into space with the ball when needed, organised those around him, lifted and dropped the tempo when he was on the ball as he felt fit.

It might not have been as eye catching as some of his talismanic performances but it was a proper ‘roll up yer sleeves and shove the outside criticism down their throats lads’ performance.

Played well tonight. Was raging when he outmuscled one of their players and the ref gave a foul near the end.

Thought he was excellent on Wednesday night.

He’s covered more ground (37km) in the Champions League than any other player so far this season. Leading by example.

He was a big miss today, Bernardo is no holding midfielder.
