McGregor and Turnbull have been the pick of the team for me from the pre-season games so far. So bodes well that we may see McGregor back to his best this season.

I agree with you. I wanted Ajer although I obviously all along new that it was all but certain he would leave this summer. As you say a screamer, hard tackling player is not the only template for what makes a good captain.

“ingrained within the fabric of the club”.. as nice and fanciful as that sounds, it doesnt mean he is a captain.
You could say the same about James Forrest. He isnt a captain.

when sutton, larsson, lennon, mcnamara, mjalby, thommo, etc were in the squad you could have your pick of a captain. Each one of them demanded the level required from the next.

there isnt one player in our squad now who is as ruthless and driven as that group of players. Thats what worries me.

I like Cal mac as a player. I think at times he is misused and doesnt impact a game enough for a player of his ability. But a few years ago i would have never have looked at him and thought theres a future celtic captain. And i think you would be lying if you looked at him and said he was one.

I just simply dont think he has the presence or commanding nature. I think if he did, it would have shone through last season.

It’s neither ‘nice’ nor ‘fanciful’, he has grown up at Celtic is our best player and clearly is respected by everyone for his ability and leadership qualities.

He is a phenomenal choice to even have never mind turn down. Those decrying him as not being captain material are living in a bygone age of snarling hard men being the only option as a squad leader. It’s 2021 and McGregor is a modern centre mid with the technique and ability to match.

    Absolutely the right choice.

im not convinced and im not sure that pointing towards his technical qualities in any way highlights his suitability.
Did you see the qualities of a captain in him last season?

I think his appointment as captain highlights how lacking in real characters we are at the moment. Iv lived through a few eras of celtic teams now and i can honestly say this is the most concerned iv been.

    Never thought I'd say it...

... But really starting to think the * PLC and Lemon might have had a point, about our supporters acting "spoiled".

How the *, can anyone object to Cal being given the armband is completely mental.

These boards are pure horrendous these days.

Acting like EPL mid table supporters, demanding the impossible.

    * joke.

I seen next to no qualities in anyone last season, absolutely no mileage in using that as a stick to beat him with.

I’ve lived through several generations of Celtic side myself and I’d tend to agree from this exact point but one of the only things I take heart from is that we still have Calmac and he’s now our captain into the bargain.

Your idea of characters is a portrait of a footballer from an age that is long gone.

You want a Roy Keane as captain.

There is, in today's game no need for such a character, football has evolved and so has its personalities who play the game, being a pointy shouty bloke who gets agro with his teammates isn't prime captain material anymore.

Cooler, calmer, approachable guys who have respect of the squad are required, McGregor is that man.

This is the thing ,whatever opinions are on his Captaincy, the most important thing is that he's still at Celtic.

I think both he and Turnball will be vital for us this season.

I think we could do with a few experienced heids in the team still.

I think looking around the squad a bit of character is missing so hopefully we can add a couple players around the same age as McGregor.

In a sort of way, yes. He was the only player to come out and criticise the way we where set up and playing. You’d never get Brown doing that, he was too far up Lennon's *.

Thats not true at all. You are trying to change it into your interpretation. Iv named plenty names already and you could choose many names who fit the profile of the qualities iv mentioned. You could have as easily have said Kompany.

Tierney for me, will be an Arsenal captain. Its a matter of time. He is a modern day player and so disproves this theory. He sets the standard.

I have and will convey my own points, so dont mistake or misconstrue what im saying into your words.

Tierney is always being called a throwback of a player

Speaking specifically on the pitch, i didnt mate.
That isnt a criticism levelled only to Mcgregor. I just think we are lacking in players with the right character.

The appointment of mcgregor as captain, is for me, symptomatic of this.

Right now for me in terms of a quality starting lineup the only 3 I feel we have are McGregor, Turnbull and Forrest. Scary how far away from where we need to be/want to be we are right now.

The bit in bold I totally believe. Like I say, I love the player. We don’t need to kid ourselves on or look past the lack of choices we had for captain in order to acknowledge how good a player he is.

The bit underlined I don’t agree with at all: not in a month of Sundays is McGregor the best we could have gotten - worldwide - to captain us. Bizarre statement, imo.

There’s blind defence of the players we like, and then there’s that.

The point being, in case you missed it, you can’t buy what he has and/or brings to this club and this squad…

McStay wasn’t a shouty hard man act guy, his football on the park showed he was a leader by setting the example.
But in truth neither was Burns, McGrain, Murdoch, Macari these guys played football Dalgliesh the same they lead by example.

I think McGregor will be a good example to the others as they say you need 3 or 4 leaders on the park Julian is a leader in defence I even think Ajeti could be a leader if he finds his form and becomes a regular for us. Hopefully Starfelt will be a leader to

Just to be clear also, like any celtic fan, and despite my beliefs and convictions, I 100% hope this is the case.
