Aye it's nowhere near actually being there. That's actually another positive about McGregor's performance last night, he was always visible and always doing something prominent. If the boy has taken on some defensive aspects of Broony in his heyday, next step might be watching calums movement.

Looks sharp and he'll thrive on being given the Captaincy. If he is a success as Captain after the excellent career he's already had at Celtic he would move into Legendary status. If you are a Celtic Legend, you are immortal, the fans will never forget you.

Looking like he is back to his old self, would like to see him Turnbull and Soro getting a run of games together, with Tam in front.

The only, and correct, choice. Hope he continues getting back to peak form.

Can't argue with the logic as to why he was chosen but he wouldn't have been my pick.... also with Ajer (just about) away there's not many alternative candidates in the squad either.

    Regardless, congrats to him.

im pretty underwhelmed and disappointed by this. I think this was an opportunity to go out and bring in a real leader and warrior on the pitch who could take this team into a new era.

I think CM can be a very good player on his day, but in no way is he a captain for me in terms of what we see on the pitch.

Callum McGregor is the new Celtic captain, and will be Ange Postecoglou’s leader on the park as a new era kicks off for the club.

The 28-year-old midfielder has come through the Celtic Youth Academy system, and after a season on loan with Notts County, made his first-team debut for the Hoops on July 15, 2014 in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik in Iceland, when he scored the only goal of the game.

He has gone on to make 326 appearances, scoring 53 goals, and he’s won 14 trophies – six league titles, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups.

He has also been capped 34 times by Scotland, scoring one goal – in the recent European Championship against Croatia when he was one of Scotland’s most impressive performers.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou said: “Callum is a player who leads by example, both on and off the park, and he is a key figure in our squad.

“He has been at Celtic since he’s been a boy, he’s come through our Academy, had a loan spell away from the club to gain vital experience, and then returned to establish himself in the first-team. His qualities as a player are there for all to see, and that has been evident over the past few years.

“He knows what it takes to be a successful Celtic player, and he knows what it means to captain this club, and I’m delighted that he will be wearing the armband and leading the squad going forward.”

Callum McGregor added: “To be the Celtic captain is a great honour for any player, and to be given the captaincy is a very proud moment for me and my family.

“I know I’m following in the footsteps of some great names in the club’s history, and I’ve been able to learn from one of the best in Scott Brown over the past few years.

“I’m delighted that the manager has put his trust in me by giving me the captain’s armband. It’s a new era for the club and I’m looking forward to playing my part in that.”

Cannot agree with any of that.

Cal had a poor season, as did EVERYONE.
But he's captain material. Will take the role to heart and run himself into the ground.

I don't see how you could have a new player, new to the club, the culture, the fans, the training ground, the city/ country the changing rooms ffs, the EVERYTHING... walk in a start the Billy big boy act.

    Never happening.

Any player who could pull that off would need a fair amount of respect and professional gravitas about them, and a player like that is simply beyond us, financially and professionally. A player like that is likely to be captain somewhere else, and at a club in a far superior league, with miles better wages.

    Fantasy stuff mate.

He's got a wee nice schoolboy demeanour. Seen his club videos where he's joking about and giggling like a wee kid.

Leader of men? Not for me. Hope to * he proves me wrong, but he's never Captain quality for me.

I think following Brown is always going to be hard and he will constantly be compared for the wrong reasons.

Would I say that he screams out to me as a natural captain ON the park? Not at this moment, no.

However by all accounts everything I've heard about him off it is that he leads by example and is very popular in the dressing room, in addition to being a great professional. That all plays into it too.

Its not just about what we have seen on the park to date. I hope he can grow into it.
